First season hunter here, located in SEPA (see username). According to what I've seen on here and on Mushroom Observer there have been plenty of finds in SEPA in past seasons. I just don't think it's time quite yet. On the nature walks I've taken so far this year I haven't seen a thing yet, but I think it's just a matter of time. We've been having some nights in the 40s and even 30s still, and there's supposed to be some more of that to come in the next couple of weeks. Once it gets a tad warmer I think things should start happening.

Dont give up bro it can be tough your forst season but it will pay off, each year you have more and more patches and experience. Hunting is an investment in the future. Think of it like learning to fish versus buying a fish sandwich at mcdonalds.

I'm about 45 mins north of NYC....and yea, I was out for 5-6 hours yesterday and only saw a couple mushrooms, the funny thing is that they were growing in the mulch (weren't ovoids) in front of the state park's entrance and those were the only ones I saw after scouring the actual forest in the park..
So there's a good chance we need to wait a bit longer...

MO is a fantastic website and is how i found my first ovoids. I highly recommend it if you are new to an area or you just dont know where to start. It really narrows it down. In my case to within a few miles.
Instead of searching random places for hours on end.

Northern Virginia is popping like crazy. This is my 2nd week ever hunting and apparently I picked a good time to start.
To anyone in the DC area struggling, if you're in the right environment I'd be surprised if they're not growing. Its more likely you're just not seeing them. I say this because my gf has proven to be much better at spotting them than I have. I get us to the right places then she finds 80% of the patches first. If it were just me I would have missed so many and would be wondering why they're not growing where they should be. But she's got some serious eagle eye going on. She's a natural.
Point being, refine your search game. If you're not finding them change how you scan the ground. Carry a stick to push aside the longer ground cover as you walk and inspect closer. They're in there.

I saw plenty of indications of a strong second flush coming on. Lots of pins and mulch activity happening. This cooler weather is also keeping fruits viable longer than usual. Last year stuff popped and started rotting almost immediately

What's the general concensus on picking ones that have started drying out naturally in the sun already but generally look good besides that?

The season is just starting. It's way too early to start getting disappointed.
They have been found in Manhattan so Eastern PA should be good.

SEpa7.....I have found a few large patches already...they're out in SEPA & further south for sure. As OhVoid said, if you're in the right habitat and not seeing them, look closer. They're in there. When I find a premium habitat, I spend 45+minutes going over it with a fine tooth comb.
So far I've harvested over 800g wet for the season, all in SEPA & Delaware.
A mushroom indicator species I've noticed are dryad saddle mushrooms. They're easy to spot, and they prefer dead & dying boxelder, just like ovoids. So if you're in floodplain habitat & see dryad saddle on downed wood, there's a good chance you'll find ovoids too if you're taking time to really search in depth around that area.
See you out there

I've literally been standing in Japanese knotweed by rivers and haven't seen a thing. I'll just bring them to me instead. Good luck out there!

Do I need a stick or something? Went to the mill and saw nothing. Was literally standing in knotweed by the river.

Red Lion, they're likely in there, but you're unlikely to ever see them unless you get really lucky or search every damn inch of dirt.
I focus on areas where I can actually see the woody debris and the vegetation is not too high...that way, it's actually possible to spot something.
They are super difficult to spot, I've been hunting all types of mushrooms on both coasts for 9 years and IMHO Ovoids are one of the hardest species to hunt because they are so small and their habitat is really messy. They are the proverbial needle in the haystack, which makes the finds all the more exciting.
You want to make it as easy as you can on yourself and choose areas that have the key habitat components but also some visibility...a lot of great examples have already been posted on this thread. Good luck!

Japanese knotweed is fine but Box Elders seem to really be the primary indicator. In the last 2 weeks I've found them in every sort of underbrush, the one common factor is always lots of box elders in flood plains near rivers.
Also if you have to get into the thick stuff following deer tracks has been key since the ground cover is more sparse on either side and you can see a little better.

Thanks for the pointers man. I've been walking a 2-ish mile stretch of trail tucked away in the suburbs that runs along a creek, and I haven't seen any type of mushroom yet whatsoever. I should probably try different areas, I'm guessing.

SEPA here as well, and all I can say is mushroom activity is not up to par in our area yet. Weve had very few cold light rains and 3-4 days of dry cold sunshine with no humidity in between. We are just a few (3 weeks im guessing) behind central and western PA. Im sure some patches are fruiting but the majority is not. Im no pro as a matter of fact my username states otherwise. But I know mushroom fruiting conditions and right now just doesnt seem right. Even next week is supposed to be cold ( low of 33 one day).... I think late may/early june will be our best bet. As for the experienced pro's in here, how did I do picking my new spot today?!?! Is this somewhere you guys would hunt?
