Aerial mycelium / general questions
    #26649661 - 05/05/20 03:32 AM (4 years, 8 months ago)

Day 6 since spawning. I see a lot of mycelium that looks like spikes growing upwards. They are called aerial mycelium correct? Does that mean I need to introduce more FAE or should I just leave it alone?

Tub 1

Tub 2

For tub 1, I used a liner. I see alot of people trimming their liner. Is there a purpose for that? Also, how do you dunk with a liner? From my understanding, the liners purpose is to stick on the substrate to prevent side pinning. But if I dunk the sub in water, wouldn't the substrate separate from the liner? Since the substrate will shrink and the liner is sticking onto the sides of the tub, it would leave a gap between the liner and sub.

For tub 2, is it ready for fruiting? I've already started fruiting right after spawn by flipping the lid using unmodified tek. But should I start misting and fanning? When misting and fanning, are you misting until you see beads on top of the sub and then fanning until they all evaporate? Or do you want beads on top of the sub at all times during fruiting? Lastly, do you stop misting when pins form? Heard a lot saying it's bad for water to touch the pins as it can abort. I apologize for all the questions. Just wanted to get it all out there so I don't have to keep posting threads asking a few questions.

Liners will not help with preventing side pins. Its all about surface conditions, also tamping down the substrate surface during spawning helps. A good level surface with proper surface moisture is all you need.

Those tubs look good IMO. I would check in around day 8-10 when the surface is fully colonized.

How did you prep your substrate? If you do not se water beads all along the surface then you can mist from high above to allow the mist settle like dew drops. You will want to keep those drops on the surface always. No need to fan.
What I like to do, is provide less fresh air during colonization, then when it looks like its beginning to knot up, I increase fresh air. Just be sure to keep the surface glistening with little tiny beads like dew on a spider web

That's rhizo myc. I would wait a few more days before checking for water beads, they will form on their own.

I know ultimately it's proper surface conditions that prevent side pins, which is why I did 1 tub without a liner to see if I can get it right. It's my first time growing so it's all an experiment to me right now.

I used a brick, 2 qt verm, 1/2 cup gypsum. And I'm already starting to see water forming on the surface by itself. When I take a picture with flash, it sparkles like glitter lol. Sooo excited everything is going well so far.

Sweet!! Just ensure it always has beads on it!
Did you tamp down the surface pretty good and ensure the surface was level as possible?

Yup. I got it as even as I possibly could. I can't wait to see some pins. Tub 2 almost fully colonized woohoo!
