From what I read Mexican Eagles are a major spreeder of spores. There were two birds that do this .Think the other was a teel, not sure.

This is a cool find no matter what. GL

mister rogerz... have you considered contacting a local mycological club or university mycologist to see if p. mexicana has ever been recorded in texas. you might be able to find a mycologist to give you a positive id. or... mayhaps you have run across something that hasn't been seen before i.e. a new species. mushroom distribution is always in flux and where i live in north eastern kansas the number of confirmed species continues to grow year after year. keep in mind not many people are out looking for fungi

It would not be illegal if you brought the club/professer a very small amount of fresh specimens with all of the identification information for ID purposes.
You just have to have a very scientific attitude about it. If you approach any mycologist with sincerity claiming to have found P. Mexicana im sure he/she would be interested. I think it's a great idea to get this checked out, but be careful of course. I don't think that any surrounding law enforcement would recognize it as a psilocybe since it's so out of habitat but just think about it.

Seriously??! He should have at the very least took a freaking spore print and sent it to someone! Jesus this is the most pointless significant mushroom find in history if the OP was telling the truth. Did you check for sclerotia? Because a lack of sclerotia could suggest an even rarer find of psilocybe samuiensis. This could have been such an amazing and historical post... but to be honest I have trouble believing it. Especially thinking that there was absolutely no way for you to take a picture of the specimens.. and every idea given to the OP to validate their claim, was quickly shot down for no real reason. UGH, jesus… sometimes I see stuff like this, and it breaks my heart that ignorance could have just prevented a new psilocybe species from being discovered.. I mean, Tampanensis has only been found in the wild like 3 to 5 times... and was only discovered quite recently, so based on that, it seems like the Mexicanae section of psilocybes can be quite elusive and any strange finds of any Mexicanae species should quickly be identified and preserved for future study, in case the species is never seen again.... For future reference to anyone who ever reads this completely ridiculous post.
