I mean, misery loves company?
And as a grown-ass adult, I just right now realized why "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" is sung in counterpoint.

Good lookin couple! I don't think I've ever shared a canoe with a girlfriend, but if I have I'm certain that I was grumpy the whole time.

It makes sense that a double sided magnet would double your chances of pulling something up. But the magnet that the guy in that video uses has SO many bad reviews. The overall reviews are good, but there are just so many that said the magnet is useless and that they don't accept returns on it! One guy shows a video of him putting it on his fridge and then easily pulling it off. Then I found that website I linked above, and they say that this magnet, which is single-sided, is the best. Who knows?

I wouldn’t stress too much about your magnet. At the end of the day they’re all Chinese junk. I’ve got a much more powerful magnet I bought from Harbor Freight but it is too big and bulky to fish with.
I’m at work and my boss is lurking around but I’ll take a picture of it in a minute.

Looks fun, though I'm guessing 95% of the finds are just cans, bottle caps and trash.
Using the technique in the video you'd need a buddy as well.

That buddy technique is pretty cool but I have a feeling that, at first at least, I'd just throw it out there or drop it from a boat/canoe. But yeah, I fully expect to find mostly trash. But you never know. You might find a skateboard, like Steve-O and that guy did.

Might as well scuba dive with the appropriate gear that allows one to easily search and sift through the silt at the bottom of lakes and rivers and ocean shorelines. with a good net and some powerful magnet(s), pus a powerful light and some other stuff your set to go.
Done that way, I’ve seen some crazy finds. I’ve got a friend who lives in Emerald Isle. and he goes out around the beaches and the little islands around near his beachouse to find things that were lost by others.
Some surprising finds, and some lucrative ones, but mostly garbage. Still, it’s a neat hobby.
Those little islands are the shit.

I bought a 200kg fishing magnet. If you're going to get into it, I recommend a way stronger one. The ratings they give are only for iron at least 10-15mm thick, and not many things in your local river are likely to be that thick. Plus, you have to take into account that most of the time (unless you're lowering it straight down from a pier or something) you're casting out into a body of water and using lateral force to bring things in. These magnets don't hold as well laterally as they do otherwise. They're pricey, but get the strongest you can afford.

Not to mention, a lot of the good stuff down there can’t be magnetized. Plastics cases, waterproof kits for storing money and jewelry or phones n keys etc.

Oh man, baby steps man lol. I'm not ready to (pun intended) dive all the way in here. I just want to buy a good magnet and rope and see if I like it. Then down the line, if I really get into it, maybe I'll invest in all that other expensive stuff.

That's why I think the double sided must be better. I keep going back and forth on this, but I'm considering ordering a double sided 1,200 pound one directly from Brute Magnetics. But still not sure.

That's awesome and made in the USA too!
I'm 'bout to order one of those.
I had to drive a lot today and I was daydreaming about making some type of pole with a fly wheel on the end and a hand crank that you could really cast the shit out of a magnet and reel it in like a true fishing pole.
I've always been a big fan of magnets ever since I was a little kid. This is the one I got at Harbor Freight many years ago for tool retrieval.

how strong of a magnet would it take to pull the iron from someone’s body/blood? I’m not sure if that’s even possible, but I want to try - for science.

Probably not enough iron content. Like take MRIs. Very powerful electromagnet and it has no effect on blood.
However, people with metal plates in their head cannot go into an MRI or it will cause serious damage to the person and the MRI machine

A dirty little river in Northeast Alabama. I know it like the back of my hand in regards to where people are likely to drop their valuables into the drink. Put ins. Take outs. Lunch spots. Etc.

Nice, I need to do a river trip.
I have a few spots around a lake that I regularly find people treasures...I've probably acquired around $300 worth of fishing gear, and about $80 in golf balls.

The one I got was double sided and 440pounds. It's not nearly strong enough for my liking. Don't get me wrong, you don't want to accidentally stick it to a panel of your car or get it near your phone, but the force it applies is proportional to the amount of iron it's in proximity to, so it's full force of 440 pounds only applies to steel 10-15mm thick, and anything less gets only some percentage of the force.
Also, the inverse relationship between proximity and force is exaggerated in neodymium magnets. Even a relatively small normal household magnet will pick up, say, a paperclip at distances equal to or greater than my 440 pound fishing magnet. Just another reason to get as strong a magnet as you can. If I were going to upgrade I wouldn't look at anything less than 1600 pounds.

I'm looking to get at least 1,200lb. I'm not looking to pull up a Buick lol.
What sorts of cool things have you guys found or have your friends found? I know it's mostly trash, but what are the cool things that have been pulled up?
