Magnet fishing * 3
    #26650154 - 05/05/20 09:24 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Recently I discovered a bunch of YouTubers who use powerful magnets to fish stuff out of lakes, rivers, etc. It seems like a pretty fun and interesting hobby. Has anyone else done this or know anyone who has?

Here's video showing what I mean. The main reason I show you this one is because in the description, he gives you the link for the materials he uses. Then after that, I have a video of the same guy, magnet fishing with Steve-O, just because I like Steve-O.

I'm thinking about doing it and maybe just trying it with one magnet first. Just one magnet is $50 though. Jeez. Then the rope is $12. The bracket he links to is sold out.

One thing I've seen from these videos is that they find a disturbing amount of knives and guns. And you gotta figure that if they find 10 knives, at least one of them was used to stab/murder someone. That's pretty heavy.

:uhoh:

I'd be too worried about losing or breaking my nice magnet but it seems like it could be kind of fun in the right spot. If that thing dropped and stuck to something under the silt it would just be gone

I did this for a while and mostly just got bottle caps and trash.  Wish I knew someone with a boat to take me out on a lake or something and I'd probably have found some interesting shit.

True story...I cast my line out into a canal, lost my grip, and in went the magnet and rope.

I’ve watched some of these videos and also folks with SCUBA gear in rivers. They seem to find lots of sunglasses and cellphones.

Your best bet is probably to make a loop at the end, so you can grip it.  It would definitely suck to lose that thing.  I'm glad you guys brought that up.  If I end up doing this, I'm definitely making a loop.  That sucks that you lost yours, SITR.

My sister lives near a lake and I think we're going to take the canoes out and do it, if I put the cash down.

A bunch of kids were doing this at the park out front

In 5 minutes they pulled two bicycles out

You should totally get the "Magnet of Death" from supermagnete.com

Its pulls about 980N (or a 100kgs) and weights only 500gr

Me and a couple buddies have gone magnet fishing on the local river a few times. The magnets we bought are so powerful they pick up rocks.

My buddy was convinced they were meteorites, lol.

We were convinced we would find all kinds of cool shit but really it was just a bunch of trash and scrap.

They actually want to get out on the river this Sunday and I'm considering it.

I was worried about that so I tied one of those float bags like for a rescue throw rope onto the end of mine.

Eh, I'm in the states and I'm sure I can find something as good or better here.  Click here for a top 10 list that someone made.

Not a bad idea, but why not just make a loop and put your hand through it?  And I saw your picture of your magnet.  What brand is that?

Well I see I have been lied to by this shitty company called Supermagnete

Their magnet of death is a piece of crap compared to the stuff you can buy

I'm sure there are a million ways to do it. A loop would be fine I'm sure. I've seen guys use carabiners and shackles and whatnot but I just tied mine onto a cheap length of Home Depot rope with a noose knot.

I bought my magnet off Amazon. It is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Diameter-Magnetics-Underwater-Retrieval/dp/B07J4H3SK9

I got into an argument with this random kid that was out on the river that was saying you couldn't magnet fish with a single sided magnet but he didn't even have a magnet of his own.

My dad and I used to magnet fish for tackle when the real fish weren't biting.  We did pull in lots of tackle, but otherwise we caught mostly uninteresting trash as Shroomerintherye said.  Trash and iron slime.

Yeah I was disappointed. That's not to say you can't find cool stuff but I didn't.

I lost a very nice Joe Camel Zippo lighter in that same river and I secretly envision myself finding it again one day.

I'm not sure how it relates to sisters but they say paddling tandem is the leading cause for divorce.

I can testify that is extremely accurate.
