Presto pressure cooker problems.. * 1
    #26649907 - 05/05/20 06:51 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey team,

Have just started my first Agar mix and am pressure cooking it as we speak. Following BOD's tek, it says to pressure cook at 15 psi for 20mins. I bought a new regulator, a weighted one so i didn't have to worry about adjusting the heat as much and its supposed to be 15, 10 and 5 psi for each weight. This is the first run with it and its hit 10psi with all three rings on and it's started to let pressure out. Anyone have any experience with this? One post I read on here suggested the gauge may be reading 10psi when it's actually 15 so i will order a new gauge to replace it and see if it still has the issue. No other leaks apart from the steam coming from the pressure regulator, could it be loose or something, like the rings need to be tightened?

In regards to sterilising the medium, will 10psi for 40mins suffice? I can't do much more than that I'm afraid. Cant be sure if I'm just using the regulator wrong but it seems to be pretty straight forward.

Thanks!

You'll prob be fine at 10 psi 30 minutes but I don't understand why you have weights and a regulator. You generally have either one or the other. Can you upload pics of the top of tree pc?

I just use the regulator that came with my presto and tape a 6 pennies on it (instead of quarters but it's the same weight Bod's pc tek).  You will have to worry about temp any way, as once it gets to pressure you are suppose to turn down the heat. It's not the weight that creates the presure it's the heat and too much heat will be the same presure but you will run out of water faster and risk destroying your plates or pc. The weight just alows it from Escaping.

If you have the original presto weight, use that one, and if not I would buy the replacement specifically for your model and it will work better. The reason people love prestos is they work perfectly the way they are designed and I probably would not add the weight bit I think it helps for higher elevations.  There are a lot of "teks" here about how to use a presure cooker bit most of them are just basic directions and you will find the same in your pc booklet.

As far as extending the time, I dont know how long that would have to be.

Ive been reading up on it and I'm thinking there is a high chance my gauge is out of whack, it's been moved house and heavy handed for the last year or so since we moved.

"ALL AMERICAN pressure cooker canners are weighted-gauge canners. The pressure dial gauge is supplied as a reference only for when the unit is pressurized and timing for canning may roughly begin, or when the pressure has dropped to zero and the lid may be safely removed. The accuracy of your pressure dial gauge is +/- 2 pounds"

Can't you just use the original toggle weight that came with the Presto 23qt? It rattles at 15 psi?

I still have my Presto, I mostly use it as a pot for grains and stuff tho. I have an AA941 that I converted to a Sterilizer.
My Presto just needs a new rubber gasket, it broke

I mean it vents auto when it reaches the weighted regulators PSI rating right?

You're supposed to let it boil for 10mins without the weight on. That way, all air inside gets displaced with steam. Your results may vary without doing that.

I have definitely noticed a difference in my pc cycles when making sure to let it vent for ten  minutes before the addition of the weight. Before when I just slapped the weight on at the same time as putting the heat on I was forever needing to move the pressure cooker around the hob to find a sweet spot to get the pressure cooker to flick the locking mechanism which enables it to build up past 5 psi, however, venting for ten minutes and then putting the weight on it instantly starts building pressure without any issues at all.

See that little round metal circle cylinder on the PC lid? Wnne you put your jars in the PC, turn heat on high without the weight, and when that metal deal pops out, thats when you start the venting timing - about 10 to 15 minutes. Then put the weight on.

its funny because I have marked with black marker on my stove heat knob where it needs to be to keep it at 15 psi

My lock doesn't pop up on its own anymore. I need to bump it a little. But I can also do that as soon as it boils and it will go into top position.

I don't think it should be used as an indication of anything. Get a good boil going, wait 10 mins and put the weight on.

ive had about every type of cooker you can get over the years.
AA is the only thing for me now.

all the prestos i had would hardly survive a season wthout problems.
getting new seals is a total pain.

remember,
a seal will always go bad at the peak of production.
having 2 0r 3 spare seals is suggested,
as sometimes replacement seals for prestos are defective brand new.

They're not shit no haha. They're flimsy compared to an All American , which are made out of machined aluminum, but you can get a Presto 23 for like $60+ and it will get the job done. An AA921, which holds roughly the same amount is close to $300.

A soda bottle holds over 100 psi. Unless you do something incredibly stupid pressure cookers are very safe.

Also AAs are completely unnecessary but sometimes people need aka want the overkill

Have you tried seeing if the two pieces of the lock are screwed together all the way?  I’ve had one that came unscrewed just slightly and whistled loudly too because there was a tiny gap and a seal wasn’t being fully made until I pulled up on the lock a little
