You could also just dial back the water you add. Your Millet might require a bit less to become properly hydrated through a cook

Try 5-10% less and use the same process and see where you land.

Frustrated with burst grains. I bought straight millet from a bird store, very clean. I'm down to 100G of water to 230G of millet, plus a little gypsum. Pulling them straight from the PC after 90 minutes. Any ideas?

Ratio of burst grains? Are you using hulled millet?

Are you using propane or natural gas?

Pic of grains?

Some burst grains arent that big of a deal. A friend uses millet and milo and has exceptional results even though she too mentions burst grains. She soaks tho and doesnt use this method.

As long as its not predominantly burst youll be alright. Myc will gobble that shit up.

Im curious to see some photos.

I don't know if the millet is hulled. It came from a bird store, White Proso Millet. I would say its 10% or less burst grains. I have a electric stove. I will run another jar tomorrow and take pics before I shake. Thanks!!

Question: i absolutely despise the smell of rye berry being boiled or PCd. What does this bird seed smell like cooking?

"Put the canner lid on and lock it into place. After a couple mins  the lock mechanism lifts into place and steam starts to escape the vent. "

arent you supposed to wait for rolling boil and large production of steam and then place the weight and pressure lock will shoot up immediately?

If you hate rye then millet or wbs probably kill you. Millet smells starchy almost like corn without any hint of sweetness perhaps grassy but pungent/bitter.

Its not as bad as wbs but quite Similar. Millet smell doesnt linger as long as wbs imo.

You might like oats. They smell like a big pot of tea to me and a bit grassy but not as robust as wbs.

After you put the lid on and the water in the PC starts to heat up the pressure will build just enough afterwhile to engage the cover lock [little cylindrical do dad that raises up] once it does lift then the vent pipe will start to exhaust steam.

That's when you begin your 10 min venting timer before placing the rocker
weight on top of the vent pipe to begin allowing the canner to pressurize.

If you are placing your weight before lock raises then you're bypassing the venting step and youll likely encounter partial sterilization due to trapped air inside of your canner.

I hope that answers your question, had to edit alot..very tired yet cant sleep.

Thats seems like the correct millet.

Are you at high-altitude?

Electric coil top[old school] or electric glass/flat top?

If coil top  sometimes youll need to lower the burner gradually towards the end of the cycle and slowly drop down to 10 psi then lower heat til 5psi then turn it off. Glasstop surfaces stay hot af after being turned off so that also prevents the pressure dropping too rapidly.

If youre using a glasstop stove try turning the burner off at 75mins then let it sit and drop pressure.

Again, not too big of a deal as long as you dont have a overly wetspot of burst grains all mashed together. Myc will rip right through a few bursts scattered throughout the jar.

If it bothers you though then try those suggestions out.

thank you very much, this was very informative. I think I will try a the Oats and also thank you for proper method for venting/PC. I swear I read the manual! lol

Have just tryed this tek with 3 jars of 180gr millet and 95 100 105gr of water, PC it for 90 minutes and when i was going to bang my jars after the pressure was gone they where already loose, wasnt necessary to bang it.

Does it look ok?

just tried this with milo/sorghum a couple of days ago and the wedges I threw in there are growing fine. Just know if you do use milo use a little extra time to rinse the grains off and separate the chaff at the beginning cuz they were dirty af when they came out the bag.

Hey! For anyone else that does this prep.

I'm trying to find a solution to doing this with unmodified lids.

2 jars remain sideways in my PC on top and when I pc with unmodified lids (plastic) I leave them cracked slightly.

When I do this grain prep that water leaks out.

I've resolved this by elevating the lids with empty agar media bottles but I'm looking for a better solution.

I gave up on no prep millet. Since it's just batches of 10 jars I m just gonna boil em till beginning to swell, then rinse the starch off from broken grains. Once drip-dry load 2/3 full and PC for 90min. No problem with lids that way. Better hydration too IMO.

My sketchy solution that I'm just waiting for one to tip over and leave a sticky mess in my PC...

I absolutely love how lazy no prep is. It also consolidates my workload to one room AND saves me from washing more items than necessary.

I'd switch to bags before going back to prepping grain.

You don't need the tin foil by the way. I have never used tin foil when PCing grains and they turn out fine. I am curious if everything in your pot is so messy because the jars are all different shapes/sizes?

I have a stack of 2 lid rings 4 on 1 level 4 on the next with the bottom tray laid on top. Usually I am able to fit 7 quart jars standing straight with 2 laid across the top (23qt Presto).

As long as you have the right amount of water to millet you don't have to soak/boil/"dry rinse"/etc. Add the correct amount of water shake/stir to make sure the water is evenly distributed and covering all the grains and PC. Works with WBS too.

Good to know! I was worried about moisture evaporating out of the qt jars so did it as precaution.

If you look closely there's another 500ml media bottle on the bottom layer along 7qts to make a tight fit so nothing rattles around. That could be why it seems uneven and messy. All qt ball widemouth with black ball plastic lids.

The top 2qts rest along the edges of the top 500ml to pin them up at an angle that the water won't leak out.

I do exactly as you mention at the end. No prep 260g millet 150g water 4g gypsum seems to be my sweet spot (a touch dry for up to 15ml LC if needed)

Whatever works, but I lost speed for a month cause of dry millet so just be sure to get em plump.
