How to Sterilize Grain Without a Pressure Cooker? — Small Batch

How to Sterilize Grain Without a Pressure Cooker? — Small Batch

I am a newbie, but I have watched a number of videos on how to culture mushrooms. Please excuse me if I should use the wrong words to describe my thoughts or if I have posted this to the wrong forum.

I am impressed with the simplicity of liquid culture. I DO NOT HAVE A PRESSURE COOKER. I did see a video in which a microwave was used to sterilize the liquid culture Kyro water and jars. In the microwave the water in the jars boils and the steam sterilize the lids. This got me to thinking, if I could use a microwave to sterilize the grain before I injected it with the liquid culture.

The video “Microwave Liquid Culture Jar For Growing Mushrooms” – is here:

The following is the process that I’m thinking about using. I realize that this procedure is only applicable for a few grain jars at a time and is not practical if someone is sterilizing 10’s of grain jars.

1. I plan to use quart size jars for my sterilized grain. One fits in my microwave very well. I will use a normal liquid culture lid on these jars.

2. While I am cooking the grain, I will place the jar and lid in a pan of boiling water to pre-sterilize the jar and lid.

3. After I have cooked the grain (in Kyro water ?? using the normal liquid culture recipe) to hydrate it, I will place the grain (while it is still hot and somewhat sterilize) in the jars along with enough Kyro water to cover the grain.

4. The next step is to microwave this grain jar (with the lid only loosely closed) per the video I had mentioned earlier. I think the suggestion was to microwave for 10 minutes, but I will check from time-to-time to make sure all the water does not boil away. I will use a medium power setting on the microwave to prevent rapid boiling of the Kyro water. My thought is that as long as some water remains in the jar, I will not overcook or dry out the grain.

5. COMMENT: since the grain is in direct contact with the boiling Kyro water the grain should reach a sterilizing temperature faster than in a pressure cooker where the heat from the water in the pressure cooker needs to travel through the glass jar and the air (not water) surrounding the grain.

6. CAUTION: sometimes when heating water in a microwave the water becomes superheated and any disturbance such as removing the container of water from the microwave will cause the water to flash boil and burn you.

7. When the microwaving is complete, I will tighten the lid and use the injection port to remove any Kyro water remaining in the culture. I assume, that since the spores grows well in Kyro water (in the liquid culture phase) a little excess Kyro water remaining in the grain will not be a problem.

8. After the grain is cool to room temperature, I will then inject my liquid culture.

9. I know this process (one jar at a time) is not suited for someone who wants to sterilize a large number of jars at the same time.

Your thoughts and comments are welcome along with any other suggestions on how to sterilize the grain without a pressure cooker. I especially welcome your comments on hydrating the grain in the Kyro water.

You can't sterilize grain with a microwave. I will be completely honest here I did not read your whole thread, but it is not worth putting that much thought into. If you can't afford or source a pressure cooker for whatever reason, do PF cakes with a pot and a lid. There is just no point in trying to invent a new cultivation method.

I bet thousands of people have tried to sterilize grain using other methods yet none of them are public or available in teks. Because they failed

Best of luck man, if you are trying to grow for yourself and some friends the PF tek can give you plenty. Any more than that and you may as well invest in a pressure cooker and do it right from the beginning.

Oh that guy, in the video.

In case the op wasn’t a joke, that’s not going to work and doesn’t make any sense. PC or brf cakes ft double-you

i just want to say that this is really, REALLY shitty advice in general...to anyone...in really any walk of life, in any field, doing any science or really ANYTHING.

So let me get this right "shadow"...do not innovate, do invent, do not try, do not fail. PLEASE never listen to anyone like this person I have quoted in your life. This is the opposite of how science will progress. Create your hypothesis, test it, prove it. If you fail. Modify. Try again. In this life, if you deny others that want to innovate, and tell them to not innovate and invent and think freely, you have no business in this field or really doing anything important really besides growing boomers in your moms basement. I completely understand that there are tried and proven methods, and many people have been here for years and seen many methods fail. But telling someone to not try to invent new methods is wrong. explain why it doesnt work WITH SOURCES and move on without stomping on someone trying to push science forward.

Have fun if you want to invent new growing methods.. You took a statement I made about a specific question that dude is asking and applied it to everything. That isn't what I said.

Sterilization can't be reinvented. You need pressure to reach the temperatures needed to sterilize grain.
When we know what works and we are trying to achieve a specific goal, it seems foolish to waste time trying to invent a new method, but by all means go for it.
I suggested multiple other methods that will get him mushrooms sooner rather than later. If he wants to spend several years trying to perfect some new method of growing cubes...

it's generally best to know what you are doing and have already achieved success using normal or typical routes before you start trying new experiments

p.s. I shouldn't need to provide sources for why you can't fuckin use a microwave to sterilize shit in this hobby

yeah you do actually, this guys said he was a newbie, and hes trying it for small batches. prove with sources he can not sterilize grain in small batches with a microwave. you really should source things so that people can learn the right way. maybe something logical to you and i may not be so logical to everyone.

A pressure cooker, bang the right way, for grain at least. No use in beating a dead horse. And if thats not good enough try it another way and report back with results, there is a pretty common consensus that a pc is the way to go for sterilizing grain.

1st, microwave ain't a sterilization device
2nd, grains are nutritious enough on their own. No need for any additives. Karo will probably make grains stickier and will give a headstart to any bacterial spores that land on your grain.

There's time and place for innovation. Your first grow isn't that place. You have to know how to make things work before you start deviating from that. We see noobs trying to innovate every day and it only leads to failure, disappointment and leaving the hobby. While I feel kinda ridiculous to post sources, I will:

Your logic is reversed here. In science, you have to prove something will work, something exists, ...

You're basically saying god exists until someone proves otherwise.

Oh boy this video again.
I guess if that's the thing you find first and want to go with maybe you just learn the hard way
