First Grow, tips on harvesting?
    #26647713 - 05/04/20 08:13 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I'm growing Golden Teachers for the first time in an unmodified tub.  The base is roughly the size of a shoebox, but the tub is much deeper.  I used 1 qt spawn (inoculated with MS) to 110 g of coir, which I believe may have been slightly above field capacity.

1. Should I be harvesting the whole flush now that a veil is beginning to break? or should I wait for each mushroom to grow to maturity?

2. When is the first flush "over"? ie. When should I dunk/prepare for the second flush?

If I understand correctly, being over field capacity likely led to the smaller skinnier fruits that I grew, and the fuzzy feet at the bottom indicate they could have used more FAE?
I know the spawn was slightly bacterial as well, as I lost a few other jars of spawn that stalled out, but there's no smell outside of what I can only assume is healthy mushroom.

Any constructive feedback is welcome.  Thanks!

Harvesting would come down to preference. I like plucking them right before the veil breaks.
The first flush is over when the first wave of growth is harvested.
I don’t dunk with bulk. Running some water down the side til it rehydrates is all I do. I only do this when I think it won’t have enough water to push more fruits.
The stretching could be an indication of lack of fae.

That last picture is right where you normally want to harvest.

Those are normal size, I actually think the surface looks really dry though.

Just pick the ones that are done as they grow, differentiating between flushes isn’t super important.

Would you suggest misting now then? Is there any issue misting with fruits inside? I had been misting for a while but got worried I was getting it too wet after reading that everything prior to first flush should be set and forget and backed off for a few days.

If my substrate seems to dry out on the surface, a casing would be helpful? Would the casing also help with side pins or would a liner be more effective in that regard?

Misting is fine just don’t over do it.

They are set and forget but only once you have it dialed in, if it’s dialed for too much air it’ll stay that way so you gotta mess with it until it keeps the humidity right and water beads on the surface.

Liners can help but figuring out surface conditions is more important.

And yeah casing helps too but a top layer of coir is all you need. That was a huge thing for me, I have very low humidity in my house and was having problems with dry surface which a top layer fixed.

if you have the time to babysit them, take them as they become ready. I cut em individually with love tree trunk style with an xacto and leave a stump as close to substrate as possible.

try not to disturb baby pins. the tops knock off them real easy.

+1 to rehydrate for next round - pour water down a dry edge of substrate and go SMALL amounts of water, like a quater cup. dont let it pool on top at all. make sure it soaks in. when it starts to NOT soak in, STOP adding water. I tilt the tub and wait to see water on the other end. then tilt another direction and wait to see water. all sides. prop tub up on jar rings so the tub is tilted and let the water migrate around down under there.
