Dry heat sterilization

So just curious.
Anyone ever use an air fryer to dry heat sterilize pyrex petris? Kinda funny to think about it but I was re-reading some of bod's agar stuff and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_heat_sterilization
Obviously it's not gonna function near as well as a mechanical convection oven would, but I figure maybe you'd achieve quicker results since it's basically a mini convection oven.
Obviously I can just stick em in the oven, but fuck if I give up a chance to use this damn thing lol
Just a thought, def gonna give it a shot though haha

Don’t they use some amount of oil?

I'd highly recommend you to pre-pour the dishes and just put them into your PC. Make sure to have them level in the PC and to let it cool off completely and you're having 100% guaranteed clean dishes.
Dry heat sterilization is also more work, because your dishes have to be 100% spotless. While it's still recommended for a whole lot of reasons, a small speck of old agar in there won't contaminate your cultures.

They recommend adding oil to your food cause the convection can dry out your food. Mine has a simple basket and electric heating element. I could grease my dishes and let y’all know how it turns out but I think we all know the result lol

I don’t have a PC atm, but I will in the next few months. As I understand it media can be steamed for longer periods without caramelization at 212F and still be viable. It’s all trial and error regardless of how many teks you read. I’m sure either hand washing real well, dishwasher cycle, submersing in HOT AF water and wiping with clean paper towels or wiping out with ISO would be sufficient before heat treating plates. Either way, I understand I’m not going to achieve aseptic conditions lol
I don’t mind the extra work, that’s why I went with Pyrex to begin with. Seriously rather wash em out and reuse em than order thousands of plastics, ‘skinda wasteful in the long run. Plus, I doubt I’ll have more than 10-15 active cultures at a time till I get rolling.
Looking into fermented grain as spawn as well, anybody with firsthand experience is welcome on this thread

Yeah, you can definitely clean them out, it's just way more work than working with no pour plates.
You'll need a PC for grain IMO. It should pay for itself in your first run.

Oh I’ve got some mini ziploc screw top rounds that I’ll be messing around with too. I don’t see a reason not to try a couple different avenues.
I feel you on the extra work but for right now I prefer less clutter and max value. I’m not dissing plastic, obviously that’s the crowd favorite for a few reasons and I’ll likely order a couple sleeves when I have the money.
I’ve got no doubts the PC pays for itself, just in general I like to mess around. I’m not gonna cry about a pound or two of grains getting dumped if it’s a fluke. Just curious if anyone had any success with unorthodox procedure.

I'm not advocating for plastic, I'm advocating for glass poured before the PC cycle. I hate producing trash.

Ah, gotcha. Misread that.
Yeah I mean if steaming media and dry heat don’t work for me that’s the obvious move when I get my PC. Until then, I’ve got nothing but time to fuck around lol If nothing else it gives me a couple of low stakes agar sessions, it’ll give me an opportunity to get used to the overall procedure. If I can manage to get a few clean plates without a PC then that shit should be a breeze once I do.
I’ll try no pour steam and dry heat with a pouring session. Like I said, I could use the practice one way or the other. Wasn’t really worried about condensation in plates, consensus seems to be it’s not an issue

Over a 1000 days later! I had a similar thought about using the air friar to do the same thing you are. Did you ever give it a go? If so, how’d it go!

Try it and report back. Air fry the plates, swab the inside to agar with a sterile swab and do the same with an unsterilised Petri dish as a positive control and a sterile plastic Petri as a negative control. Repeat 5 times on new plates and make a table of results and a short conclusion. Yeah science!
