Though this is controversial topic, I think the consensus is its more potent per weight/size. You get far more weight picking matures so it definitely is more desirable. Plus pins havent yet gotten the chance to drop spores.

I'm plenty aware that others may have a problem with people picking pins, but I don't personally. The way I see it I'll always be able to find enough subs for myself even if it was common practice for people to pick all the pins. Not to mention, if picking pins is going to make someone happy, then I'd rather them do that than a lot of the others things people do to make themselves happy.

Fair enough. People are always going to pick pins no matter what people say. People are always going to pick mushrooms and throw them around and kick mushrooms around too. Doesnt mean, the more experienced people of the highly esteemed mushroom picking community of the Shroomery should encourage it, or at least be indifferent to it. Melbourne has a shit load of subs, i can say freely without any shadow of a doubt, more than anywhere in the world. So you are good. Here in Adelaide its not that easy. Ive just hunted 12-15 hours without a sub. It is much harder here, and if people are encouraged to pick when they are mature that means more spore dispersal and a better chance that there will be more for everyone in the end.

3 patches in the park I was visiting daily for subs have had all 3 patches completely cleared out over the weekend, including pins

Time to branch out the search to more locations!

The problem with picking pins is it  doesn’t allow the mushroom to drop its spores once the cap opens and thus can destroy a mushroom spot. It’s very selfish imo

can we please also take a moment to remember how important it is to not rip out the mushroom from the root as this has detrimental effects on the mycelium network and can send it into shock. Please use scissors or your fingernail to cut the mushroom. </end of public service announcement>

This is not necessarily true. While you should still be careful when removing the mushroom from the substrate, some studies have shown that if it is done carefully with minimal mycelium damage pulling carefully from the base of the mushroom can encourage new growth. Obviously don’t go tearing up patches but if you grab the stem by the base and slowly pull this is okay.

this is not necessarily true.  research has been done to show that there are benefits to both aspects, but the fact that gently pulling does help promote the mycelium seems like a plus to me.

Turns out I directly quoted obtuse in his mention of this hahah here’s the study

After a few unsuccessful hunts, my first finds of the season. Inner city Melbourne.

Harder work this year, trying to avoid taking the car too far until lockdown is eased.

I am just havimg a crazy good season compared to my last one. I think I have gotten over a KG on my last trip, had to go back for another paper bag. This is all from the same 200m square park near a creek. New patches piping up daily. Pick usually around 100g a day.

I also made this Sour Kombucha Acid/Alcohol extract of 250g fresh Subarugunosa.
Drank 80mls and was on a fantastically strong adventure.
Just look at the amazing bluing colour along the surface!

No luck ;v [Re: ent]

Searched around a park / creek area in the inner suburbs (east malvern), for around 2 hours in wood chips, and only found inactives. Clearly i was getting very unlucky as i turned over every woodchip. Any tips for searching in the inner south eastern suburbs? My spots are currently inaccessible as they are all in the dandenong ranges area, and I do not want to risk a fine heading there. It was pretty frustrating finding only inactives in places where subs usually thrive, but im guessing the spores didn't make it there or something lmao. Any help greatly appreciated.

Sorry mate simply not true. Please don't spread misinformation like this.  While the realm of fungi is wildly understudied, we do have studies that show pulling mushrooms can actually cause the mycelium to 'spring into action,' effectively promoting growth, as it has adapted to allow its fruiting body to be consumed by bugs, animals, humans, etc... we are effectively helping to spread spores by even touching the fruiting body and moving away from the area. Some studies showed that 'pulling' the mushrooms actually promotes better growth than cutting. (There have been other studies that show no difference, just to put it out there). This is particularly relevant to P. subs as they are saprophytes, characterised by rapid mycelial growth across the substrate, in this case, woodchips. We need to stop looking at fungi & mycelium through our 'plant-biased' lens, they are not the same thing. Granted, if I ripped up a significant amount of the ground where this 'patch' of mycelium was thriving, I would actively be damaging the soil structure and mycelial web.

Keep in mind that fungi is far more resilient that we realise, they outnumber plants by at least 6 to 1, and according to Stamets, a single cubic inch of topsoil contains enough fungal cells to stretch more than 8 miles if placed end to end.

If you believe cutting mushrooms is truly better for your 'patch,' then be my guest. But please don't pick shame others, especially when humans in reality know so little about fungi to begin with.

Peace

**Edit: meant to reply to Ilm, sorry for the mistake @K00sh
