Okay to keep boiled oats in jars for a week?
    #26646593 - 05/03/20 05:39 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Sorry for the noob question but, well I’m a noob. First time making jars, and I’m following Bod's Easy AF Oat Prep TEK (for making oat grain spawn). I just boiled the oats and as they’re cooling I checked on my SFD order which I thought was being delivered tomorrow, but it’s actually NEXT Monday.

I boiled enough oats for 6 quart jars. I have 6 modified lids ready for the SFD inserts, but also kept 6 lids unmodified. So I could store the oats in their jars with the unmodified lids until the SFDs arrive, and then switch to the modified set for pressure cooking and beyond. I’m just wondering if it’s okay to leave the boiled grains waiting for a week. If so, should I refrigerate them?

If there’s any reason to avoid this, I’ll just boil a new batch next weekend (I got a 50 lb bag). But I figured I’d check if I can salvage what I’ve already done. Plus it’s something I’d like to know for future preps if my schedule means boiling a few days in advance makes sense for me.

Thanks a ton for any wisdom y’all can impart. Much appreciated.

I’m interested too if anyone has done this. It could work but in that time you’ll have bacteria growing and possibly some mold germinating. They will die (hopefully all) when you finally PC but they may have started using up some of the nutrients. Keeping them in the fridge would help, the freezer would stop everything I guess but might also mess with the integrity of the grains.

If you have plastic lids you can just PC and keep the lids just a quarter turn back from being tight and that will provide enoug GE while still being safe. You could also use some poly fil from an old pillow or stuffed animal and just roll with the PC now with your modded lids

you should be fine leaving them for a week. like roger said, the only issue i could really see is contams using up some nutrients before the PC cycle. putting them in the fridge in jars should be enough to slow anything down i would think

you could also run to walmart or anywhere that sells canning supplies & grab some plastic lids like roger said

Yeah, I suppose that would be easy enough. Just to be sure, is this the type I’m looking for? Those will stand up to pressure cooking?

Thanks a bunch to both of you.

Okay, that’s definitive enough for me. I will either boil a new batch next weekend or grab plastic lids tomorrow so I can PC and wait for the SFDs.

Thanks bod, for the reply as well as your guides.

I found this info about the plastic lids:

Jarden makes a line for regular and wide-mouth Mason jars (70 and 86 mm), which it markets under the Ball name in Australia, and under the Ball and Bernardin names in North America. Certified BPA-free;

So it seems like the “Ball” ones I linked to are the same as the “Bernardin” ones I’ve seen recommended in various teks here (just a different color).

Thanks again for the replies and advice.

Just use polyfill on the jars you have ready, then use the filter discs on new jars! Polyfill works great despite being second best to SFD

You could sterilize them now and then do it again when you get your sfds.

Would you iron flat a bit and cut it to fit?

Yeah, I may go that route after I pick up the plastic lids today. Thanks!

I usually just take a ball of it and roll it in my hands till its a good firm ball of it. Then I kind of twist the end to make it easier to fit through the hole, then I pull it till I can't pull no more and trim the excess. I definitely prefer SFDs but the polyfill tek works great as well. I usually do it when all my SFD lids are in use and I wan't to make jars without having to wait for silicone to dry for new lids
