Others have have already posted about choosing something you love, so I will point out the flip side of that coin: Everything has a price--so part of the questions becomes are you willing to pay that price? If not don't fool yourself.

Great point. I never understood a drive to 'be the best' - perhaps it's because I know there will always be someone better, if not now, soon enough.

But then I've never been competitve, at all. I'm happy with the skills I have, and whilst I would love to sing with a clues harp or speak spanish or do yoga well, I'm clearly not quite ready yet.

My absolute highest focus is being the best person I can be. Any other skill, whilst amazing to have, pales in comparison to me.

Also, if I'm honest, I don't like taking things that are not naturally suited to my being, like formal dancing, as I don't want to fail/give up.

I know I could do anything if I try hard and often enough, but is it really worth it for me?

I'm not so sure, but I very much get wanting it. It's very cool and attractive to be great at something.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

Spock exemplifies effort, and enthusiasm(, and ears).
I think he loved being excellent, and had good hearing (like Milarepa).
Bill and Ted had it right dudes, "be excellent!"

What if effort, enthusiasm, and mastery are simply refined levels of perception of oneself...?

For any sane adult I would hope this is the case.  Although society has its fair share of social pressures and expectations.
