Hey there,
If you are looking in getting your first tattoo, its very important to do your homework.
Find a studio and a artist that listens to you. Find someone who can surf on your ideas. and make sure to see his portfolio. Ideally healed tattoos. If there is no chemistry find someone else.
As for the style and the design. You should have a rough idea of a concept and a idea of what you want. If you have the righr artist he will do the design. Make sure you like his work so the style will suit you.
Also it is important for you to be patient. do not rush for a tattoo, let the tattoo come to you ( in some sense )
Hope this answers your question

If you like pain then go for the ribs. My first tattoo went something like this:
Me: where else would this look cool?
Artist: lift up your shirt(sticks on ribs)
Me: do it
Also me before we start: where is the worst place to get a tatoo?
Artist: ribcage

Don't expect too much, find the right artist and trust them. They know better than you what they are capable of and I don't just mean their talent. Tattoos have limitations. Don't be surprised if anything too small is a little too imaginative, make sure there is space and defined lines where they need to be. If it looks like it could be ambiguous over a few decades then it probably will be.

Brace yourself for a very unique sort of pain. Not too bad compared to being punched in the face. Also, you can't pussy out once you get started (I wanted to) so be ready for it! I'd start small... mine took 3+ hours

It's like being scraped with something sharp over and over again. With my first tattoo I drank a lot around that time and didn't pay attention to the no booze rule the night before, he had to go over it again and again because I bled out so much. It was awful. I had to go in a second time to get it finished when it should have just been one long session.

Its good to start small and simple to get an idea of the pain, aftercare, and how your skin reacts. If you get the first in one of the more painful spots future tattoos will seem less painful. The closer to the bone the better.
If youre the kind of person that freak out at imperfections, itd be a good idea to get your first tattoo somewhere commonly covered like your thigh, ankle, or shoulder so youre not looking at it all the time.
If you have friends with tattoos you should ask them their experience with local shops and if they have favourite artists. AFOAF got a shitshow of a experience because they trusted google reviews. Trust your vibe check.
If your tattoo is a good one, be prepared to crave more!

Make sure you will love that tattoo forever, because its permanent. You can cover it up but there will always be a tattoo there.
Also hand-draw what you want or bring a copy of a photo of what you want to the artist. That's what my friend did, worked well.

For the health: Avoid sunlight for the tattoed part of your body during healtime. I saw things going worse for some friends. Sun also bleaches out colours a bit.

Find somone who does what you like.
I like black and grey dot work. Where it kind of looks like realism and tradition at the same time. After I'll just wash them well with some soap and thats it. No cream or anything.

Make sure you find someone who is a really good artist, not just any old guy with a gun. A real serious artist. Look at their prior work, and judge its quality as visual art, not even necessarily as a tattoo. Tattooing is just like drawing or painting or any art, you need a good artist if you want anything good. That's why people pay so much for good artists because that's most often the difference between a good tattoo and a shit tattoo. A good artist could do traditional non-tattoo artwork and still be a badass.

Get a sense of the basic style you want. Then, find an artist that specializes in that style. This should be pretty easy since most reputable artists will have a long instagram portfolio.
Talk to the artist. In my area, I was surprised that NONE of the artists would provide me a final drawing of the specific tattoo I would get. For the artists I spoke with, the process was an initial consultation, then you go and see the final design when its actually put on.
They're expensive. 3 years ago my artist charged me $150/hour. and my half sleeve plus a quarter of my back probably took about 24 hours total.
They're painful but not excruciating. For me, its not the pain, but the DURATION. I did a large piece at a convention, so it had to be done in one day. I sat for 7-8 hours and it was horrible. I will never sit longer than 4 hours, I just don't see the point in pushing myself that much.

I was making a list in my journals for tattoo artists I follow on Instagram. But I didn't finish it and I deleted my instagram. Lot's of great artists out there.
They are not cheap if you want some mind blowing work.
