Virgin Farmer - pre-pasteurized rye bags
    #26641684 - 05/01/20 04:25 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Howdy! Long time lurker, finally turned grower. I purchased a couple of syringes (B+ and Costa Rica) from a sponsor, and a couple of rye bags from another. Inoculated them in my homemade glove box on 17 April. Here’s what they look like today:

I’m happy with the growth thus far, just not sure if I should be concerned about all the condensation. My home stays around 70F usually, so I’ve been keeping the bags in the glove box (with one glove removed to allow air exchange) with a small heating pad. This keeps it around 75F, but I’m not crazy about the electricity usage. I’m wondering if I can go without the heating blanket, and also if it might be causing the condensation. Here it is closed up:

Any advice would be immensely appreciated! Thanks for the amazing community.

glove boxes are a horrible idea but not near as horrible an idea as a heating pad or what ever the hell ur using. thats why the condensation is so high. but then add in the fact u shot spores into grains which is risky to begin with but also add in the factor you bought premade grain bags. that all equals a recipe for failure.

use agar ditch the heater use a still air box and make your own spawn and substrate

I know premade is less than ideal, but I didn’t have another option, unfortunately. I’ve since learned that a family member has an Instant Pot they don’t use, so the next run will be homemade spawn for sure.

The glove box is a bad idea all around? Or keeping the bags in it is a bad idea, but inoculation in it is okay? I thought it would reduce the chance of contamination during inoculation. I’m only keeping them in the box because of the heating situation, as I mentioned. Do you think letting them be at 70F is okay? Or at least a better overall situation?

Also, does the growth in the bag look okay thus far? I realize it’s still early, but I was just wondering if something/anything appears to be a problem (other than the condensation obviously).

Thank you for the reply.

Damn that response was salty as fuck.

I shot spores into premade grains with success for my first two grows. Wanted to test the waters before I committed to buying equipment. It's not a crazy idea to dip a toe before you dive into a hobby.

Don't use an instant pot they don't operate at 15psi.
A pressure cooker like a basic presto model will work.
That bag doesn't look good you have a contamination on the side.
also don't put the bags in the SAB or glove box.
On a shelf room temp will be fine, no heating pad.
do you have any LC or spores left?

my lord some peoples pussies get sore over nothing at all. suck it up there buttercup. i was not being salty in any way to him. im only stating what the problems were that i could see off the bat. i get to the point im not here to powder asses and hold fuckin hands and shit. so calm the fuck down pet your emotional support animal make a cup of coco then put your big boy pants on and fucking relax. but the fact u shot spores into grain is no big deal. ya it can work just fine but it is risky was all i was getting at. you gtta remember even a broken clock is right twice a day. just cuz it "worked" dont make it a good idea.  you should use agar for best results. the glove box is horrible cuz you want a still air box the gloves create a vacuum and cause air movement. so thats not exactly still air now is it. 70 feg is perfect.

Oh no! Both of them are contaminated?

Yes, I still have spores in the syringes left over, as well as a few syringes that are about a year old of some other strains (they’ve been in a box, room temperature so I expect they’re still viable).

I read a lot of discussions on these forums about the Instant Pot after I learned one was available to me. While some were concerned about the lack of 15 psi, others said that cooking time could simply be extended to compensate, and others even said it probably wasn’t an issue at all. Is there some definitive information on the subject you might be able to link me to?

Thanks a lot for looking at the pics and for the information. Greatly appreciated.

I recommend reading some more here on the site and getting familiar with agar and a SAB.
A real PC will make life easier
spores to agar
agar to grains
grains to bulk.

or PF cakes
