Any rock hounds in here? I dunno much about geology but my wife and I found this cool rock and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of rock it is. I believe it's quartz of some kind.

Found in SW Ohio.

I know nothing about geology, but that looks like cinnabar, an ore of mercury.

Wow, I think you're right. What a strange thing to find in a creek in Ohio.  Guess I better put it somewhere safe or get rid of it though.  Don't want mercury poisoning and all.

Thanks!
