The Commodore 64 * 2
    #26640425 - 05/01/20 03:34 AM (3 years, 10 months ago)

Hello

Who remembers the Commodore 64 computer?  And, who had a Commodore 64 computer?

Well, I was lucky enough to have one growing up, and for me the C64 was an awesome machine.  The games were fun & it had pretty good graphics, but another aspect I remember about the C64 was that the music it outputted, was awesome!!!

So this Thread is about appreciating the C64 music ability :thumbup:

This video is a short video about a guy called Rob Hubbard (well known for making some of the best music on the C64).

Btw, it is possible to download C64 music in .sid format off the internet.  Checkout this site below for how to do so,

More C64 music

"The Ocean Loaders"

So because games were mainly loaded from cassette tapes, game makers would include music while the games were loading up.  Ocean made some great loading tunes, Enjoy

The C64 had such a powerful and advanced sound processor at the time that the entire rest of the computer wasn't even powerful enough to properly drive it most of the time. The sound chip in the C64 is waaay overpowered compared to the rest of the system. It's like you took a small manual rowboat, and you wanted to get it an engine, so you attached the jet from a 747 onto the back. At the time it came out, it was probably the best sound chip made up to that point. But again, it was so powerful that the C64 couldn't even drive it properly, which is why a lot of C64 games either don't have music, or they only have one track.

The SID sound chip that the C64 contains is still highly sought after by electronic musicians even today, which unfortunately often results in people dismantling working C64s just to get the sound chip. It's probably one of the best sound chips ever designed.

It's just funny that of all the things they could have decided to really go all out on, they chose the sound chip.

My one complaint about the sid is that it's often lacking in bass, and is a little tinny at times.

It's sad to think 64's are being lost forever just for the sid chip(s).  If I ever get the chance to own another one, i'll keep it forever!!!

Thanks for your informative post nooneman  :retrocool:.

Next, a demo!!!!

Back in the day, groups (FairLight) would make demos for systems like the C64 and Amiga, with the intent of showing off the systems gfx capabilities and their programming skills.

Here's one of those demos (made in 2019)

"FairLight - The Last Truckstop 3 Demo (C64 demo)"

Not pure C-64 (also an Epson LQ-500, Compaq Portable, and an Atari 2600), but I dig Tree Wave:

Still have the 'ol VIC-20 stashed around here somewheres.  Didn't keep up with Commodore.
