Alternative to Casing
    #2664085 - 05/11/04 06:24 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I'm relatively new to growing, but before I begin I have read a lot about casing and found something interesting in one of the Teks. From my reading I have come to see casing as simply a source of moisture for the cakes. However one of the adaptations in Magic Mushrooms Grower's Guide seems like a much more effective alternative to casing in the fact that it not only provides moisture very effectivly, but also seems to have less area for contamination to occure.

Adaptation-17: Adding Moisture to the Rice Cake.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a cake has produced several mushrooms you can add moisture to it. Flame sterilize a 3/16 inch drill bit. Let it cool. Use it to drill a hole at the center of the cake. You can do this by hand. You do not need a drill. Do not go all the way through the cake, but drill a deep reservoir into the cake. Cut a plastic straw to 4 inches in length. Insert the straw 1/2 inch into the hole. The straw should fit tightly in the cake. Straws from McDonalds are larger than most and work well. They seal well and hold more water. Fill the straw with water daily. A 10 cc. syringe works well to fill the straws with water. You should wait to drill the hole until the cake has produced some mushrooms because the inside of the rice cake is not colonized as quickly as the outside. Also, there is sufficient moisture in the cake at the start so there is no need to add water immediately.
Advantage:
The rice cake will produce many more mushrooms than it would have without adding moisture. Using this adaptation allows the nutrients in the rice cake to be almost totally consumed before the cake is exhausted.

Disadvantages:
Care should be taken when drilling the hole because there is no way to monitor for contamination inside the hole. Also, you will need to add water on a daily basis.

Anyways, any feedback is appreciated.

Dunking works better and i think it easier.

So trippin, you're suggesting that I use these needle sleeves instead of straws? And I would think that this method would be easier than dunking due to the fact that it pretty much does not require any sort of casing mix. In addition, I was thinking that tubes could instead be used, leading to the top of the terrarium to a larger resevoir, such as a plastic cup. I was also wondering if anyone has actually tried this method instead of casing. Once again, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Dunking doesnt mean casing anything. Many people dunk without rolling the cakes in anything. It just means soaking your cakes in water for 12-24 hours in between flushes so it can soak up the water and rehydrate itself.

Rolling your cake is something that some people do after a dunk but it is not required. Rolling helps to hold the moisture in and create a sort of resavoir at the surfice.

Thanks for the clarification. Once again however, it seems to me that with this method, it would allow the grower to not even worry about removing the cake, the user would simply have to refil the resevoir, or fill each tube. In addition, I have read that touching the cakes does damage growth, and the method suggested in the Tek would completly avoid that.

Casing also serves to increase the surface area of the fruiting substrate and promotes formation of a more healthy mycelial network. I've seen some awesome pics of cakes, but casing still "takes the cake" if you will.

so you think drilling holes in your cake will cause less damage than lifting it interesting.  :hypno: :chainsaw:

A good point about the mycelia networks. In response to the drilling, I believe that the mycelia networks would have time to regenerate after the initial drilling, as compaired to repeated dunking and rolling. Anyways, basically what I'm understanding is that casing is the prefered and most effective method, though I would still like to hear about anyone who has tried the resevoir method.
