harvest / storage questions ...

I have a few boxes where mushrooms are maturing at different rates.
I've been storing the early fruiters in the fridge in a zip-lock until the late fruiters can join the others in the dehydrator, (usually a few days to a week).
Is that fine? or does storing them for a few days decrease potency?
... also - from my understanding it's best to harvest right when the veil breaks, or even right before - the potency is stronger? ... Lately I have been letting them open up and sometimes drop even a bit of spores - I find it difficult not to since many are growing at different rates and are in close proximity. they also sometimes get way bigger sometimes. I'd be curious to hear who harvests before they open up, and who doesn't and why.

Store them in paper bags. Plastic gets them nasty quick. Dehydrating as soon as you harvest is the best practice. Sometimes I'll wait a day max, but after that is not great honestly.
Harvest whenever you feel like it. No different in quality imo. I used to harvest with the caps fully open, but now catch them when they start to seperate from the stem.

The potency doesn't change much on when you harvest them. It's more governed by genetics. A tiny pin can be just as potent as a large fruit by volume. Just as the veil is starting to break is ideal just for ripeness, flavor, and bag appeal. If you have a dehydrator and a box fan what you can do is pick fruits that are ready, place them on the dehydrator racks and put them in front of the fan that day while you wait for more to be ready the next day. Then run the dehydrator with whatever you have for those two days.

Don't agree with putting them in front of a fan for a day. Much better off storing in the refrigerator if you are going to wait.

You can always cut the caps off the mature ones so you don’t get spores waiting on the rest to catch up.
Storing fresh ones in the fridge for a few days won’t hurt.

good advice rickyswamps, I'll switch to paper
thanks rumfor69, recently learned that most believe to dry them hot and quick if possible, rather than slow and low to maintain potency... https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26508255
thanks A.k.a, that's re-assuring

Yeah that's the consensus. I've done it both ways off the same clone and tripped the exactly same off the same dose of each. Didn't notice any difference. I dunno

yeah rumfor69, I think it may be subtle difference if at all.
I just find that it's a bit more convenient to get them dried in a few hours instead of a day or so.

If you let the caps mature too far they dump inky black spores *everywhere*. If you have ever gone out of town and come back to a tub like this, it suck
Once the veil breaks at a certain point they keep gaining in weight but not potency. So they don't lose the potency they already have, but because they get bigger, they become less potent *by weight*.
Why not just put the early fruiters in the dehydrator right away? It's no big deal to run

good points and some new knowlege as well mushpunx - yep - I've had some spore stains on stuff kind-of annoying.
I didn't realize they become essentially less potent (by weight at-least) that's good to know and it'll definately make me harvest sooner than later from now on.
... right now I am growing different sub-strains of cubes so there all coming up at different times. so pretty much have a little to harvest every day - just makes sense to do a dehydrating run every couple of days to save time + energy.
