Psilocybe Cubensis "Ecuador, B+, Hawaiian" PF-Tek
    #2663857 - 05/11/04 05:23 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Alright well guys, this is my first attempt at growing some. I just inoculated today (5/11/04). But before I get into that let me give some back ground info. My room is about 70-75 degrees, and uhh thats about it. But, I ordered PF Jars from Mike O'Logic (they weren't in airtight plastic like I thought they were gonna be, but he's got a contam. free guaruntee, so I feel safe.) Anyway on to inoculation...

inoculation:

Washed my hands and face with anti-bacterial soap, and put on clean clothes (longsleeve shirt). Took my 12 jars and 3 syringes (B+, Hawaain (sp?), and EQ into my bathroom, closed the door. Proceeded to clean the inoculation surface with Lysol. Anyway after the area looked and smelled clean I began to take the aluminum foil off the jars to reveal the 4 holes. Here's where I may have messed up...some jars got about 1-2 ml's and others received a whopping 3-4 ml's. Hopefully the over inoculation wont hurt too much. But I did 4 B+, then 4 Hawaain (sp?), and 4 EQ's. Put the aluminum foil back on after every injection (needles were heated up until they glowed with a lighter after every other injection, then a few drops were allowed to leak out to cool the needle down). But afterwards I took them back to my room placed them under my bed (very dark and hopefully around 75-80 degrees but probably more around 70-75 degrees. That's about it for now, I'll get some pics posted up in about 5 days once I see some growth. Any noticable things I've done wrong feel free to point them out. Tomorrow I'll post a pic of my terranium set up and the cakes :mushroom2:

figure out a way to raise the temp up about 10 degrees if it's at 70-75. Will speed things up.

Im basically going by what the temp. is outside. It's about 80 out there and I'm kinda short on cash right for an incubator. I'm gonna take some pics in a few mins though.

    #2664590 - 05/11/04 07:59 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

My colonizing jars (sitting in the fruiting chamber (just sitting there, its not been changed into the fruiting chamber yet))

My source of heat. The dish will be filled with water and the heater submersed into it. (im going to have a hard time fitting it in my terranium but I'll figure it out. any suggestions?)

My 25 Watt Incondescent (sp?) Light, Hope that'll be enough light any suggestions on the amount of time I should leave it on? (while fruiting that is)

Uh, My perlite....

What do you all think?

It's submersable (meaning that's what it's for) I'm pretty sure. The lady at the pet store said I could use it in water.

Looks nice. I think that's what afoaf's is going to look like in a few weeks. He only has 6 presterilized quart jars, but it should be quite a bit.

Been registered forever now it seems... but never seen a reason to post. Noticed you were from louisville also and decided to come out of lurking. going to start a 4 strain, 20+ jar project here in the next couple of weeks.

while you are incubating, you need to get the jars warmer than 70-75... get a small heatpad or something.

as far as amount of light... the light you have is very bright (I use to have one of those) so I'd probably use something like 8-10 hours a day.

Still no noticable growth as of yet (5/13/04). Only been 2 days so I'm not expecting any. But I'll keep ya posted.
I also constructed my TiT incubator today. But silly me turned the heater on before adding water and lo and behold cold water + hot glass = broken glass. So now I have to buy a new one sometime.
Oh well, I'll keep you all posted!

I have a suggestion for increasing the efficiency of your heater set up.  The heater looks like it is designed to be completely submerged in water. I dont know for sure,of course, but if it is then you arent getting all you can get out of it and may even do damage to it by having it on without being totally submerged.

What you should do IMO is get yourself a cheap rubbermaid food storage type container that is slightly larger than the heater. Depending on the size of the area you want to heat, a larger container will have more surface area, hence more exposure of the air which will more efficiently heat the space. You should put that baby into your inccubation area, not in your fruiting chamber. So if you have a drawer under your bed with your jars in it,put it in there to get the temps closer to 86deg. This is where the sealed feature of the plastic food storage container comes in. Just cut a notch in the lid near the edge for the cord to go through and put the heater into the water and put the lid on. This way you wont be evaporating water and raising the humidity in the inccubation chamber ,which isnt necessary and may increase the chances of contaminating your jars.

I hope this helps you out ,just make sure the heater is completely submersible before you do this or you will fry yourself or catch something on fire.

Best of luck to you truecaucasian, and dont forget to shroom up and catch a good show down at The Palace,or The Brown Theater, when you get some nice fresh ones!!

MYKEY :jamming:

Yeah I used that heater to try out a Tub in Tub Incubator...But sadly (I know I'm stupid) I put the heater in and plugged it up before I added the water. Heater got hot water was cold. Let's just say it ended up with a broken glass heater. I'm going to try and take it back and say it came like that. Or just buy another b/c It's getting cooler around here.

PS
A few patches of faint growth in 2 jars...I'll post pics soon as I get my cam back from my friend.. :mushroom2:

Use a similar if not the same heater in my incubator setup.

I secured the heater to the side of the little tup because you really cant really on the suction pads keeping hold. If you slide out the heater from the plastic holder you can screw some self tapping (wood screws, which need to have a countersink type head so the heater can slide back) through the middle of the suction cups, and then into the side of the tub. Don't push to hard on the tub as you screw or you might end up splitting the tub, it's probably best to drill some guide holes first.
To be extra safe use some bathroom sealent around the outside where the srews protrude.

Update: Didn't get camera back today, maybe sometime this week, but I think atleast 2 jars of EQ's are contamed. I'm gonna wait until I get my cam to post some pics first. There are a few spots as big as a half dollar coin that are darker than the rest of the cake. It's ok to leave contammed jars in the incubator with the rest of the jars right? Or will this lead to further contamming of the rest of the jars?

Update 5/20: Suprisingly 1 jar of hawaain is almost 80% colonized..The hawaains are fast, B+'s are slow and the EQs are all fucked with black mold. I think maybe it was a bad syringe. Oh well

Update: Got some pics in...

Shot of the Incubator.

Shot of Jars in Incubator.

Front of B+ Jars.

Back of B+ Jars.

Front of Hawiian Jars.

Back of Hawiian Jars.

What I want to do to the cakes.

All four EQ's are completely contammed. I want to plant them out door but want to know if it'd just be a waste of time. Its mostly just covered in black mold.

:mushroom2: Thanks  :mushroom2:
