Supporting the economy by getting a new (used) motorcycle

Picking it up next week when it stops raining
So stoked. Got rid of my old 250cc supermoto and moving back towards cruiser types
Perhaps one day I can afford an actual Harley Davidson

Apparently its the Honda racing colors, but our flag is red, white and blue too
Quite a lot of countries have red, white and blue
This is a small(ish) bike because I will mostly be doing my 20k commute on it
But one day I would like to have a big heavy cruiser (HD Road King or something). I just hope we can still use petrol when that time comes. Here new fuel burning cars will be banned after 2030

Oh wow, a ban? Youre right about Red, White and Blue. France has those colors too. Its like the Universal colors of Democracy or something.
Perhaps they will make electric ones that feel like gas hogs
Just realized that once laws change to reduce fuel emissions, old skool bikers are going to flip out!

Have you ridden a Harley? I've rented a couple now.

I think they're trash, personally. It's like riding something that was made in 1950 and is only good a low-mid speed cruising and does nothing else well.
Not my cup of tea at all. I don't intend to ever ride one again, and I LOVE bikes.
Nonetheless, congratulations on the new Honda!!

I have sat on a few Harleys but never actually ridden one. Perhaps Im falling for the marketing
Love the sound and the mechanical nature though, and the are pretty comfy to sit on at least
Would never get something with a radio and speakers, to me thats just weird. Might as well get a car
My first bike was a raked out 600cc Shadow, kinda stoked to get back to the Shadow template. No need to go fast I just want something thats relaxed and moves through traffic with relative ease.
I know you like speed, I have seen your UK bike

A Harley won't move through traffic with relative ease. You may as well try and navigate a boat through traffic. They're not built to filter.
If you want a machine that's comfy a hell and carves through the cars, you want something upright, like a BMW GS.
This form factor is impeccable for dealing with a city. Lots of power down low too:

There's a good reason you don't see people commuting on Harleys.

I was gonna say, if u love Street bikes then youre probably not gonna like a Harley/Chopper bike. They are just so different.
Someday i want a custom Chopper, maybe UFO themed or Overwatch themed. Thatd be amazing (and super expensive)

This was my old bike. Best traffic bike ever but not really suited for the highway
Ideally I would have multiple bikes, but the BMWs are great at handling almost anything you throw at them.
Personally I have a preference for minimalistic things and I really like bikes that are just engines with wheels on them
Its a shame that aspects that make a bike great at one thing usually make it not so great at another. Like my CRF, super easy to handle and flick around cars because it weights nothing, but same lack of weight makes it swerve around and unplanted at high speed. Also not the best for making daytrips although it can be done obvioulsy.
People go around the world on 50cc bikes
I think my new bike will be a great allrounder for me. And Im sorta switch bikes every two years anyway. Still finding out what I like:
600cc chopper 900cc Naked 250cc Moto 750cc Standard/cruisery
Who knows whats next

Yep. Two bikes is ideal, three is better!
1. Fun bike 2. Commuter (Summer) 3. Commuter (Winter)
I think the bigger BMW's have the best of all worlds.
A Harley would rust like hell used in Winter.

Nice, I had a Shadow 750 a few years back and loved the thing.
My favorite was my Yamaha dual sport:

Did a bunch of work on it to get it comfortable flying down the highway. Only got rid of it because it was too much of a hassle to get to any trails worth riding

I adore motorbikes but i basically know nothing about them. It's something i've always wanted to get into. Except for that Harly that JSB post, all these bikes looks hella sweet to me.. I personally liked your old bike more (strictly ascetically speaking) than your new one, but the Honder looks sweet as fuck too. It reminds me of the 'Angel' from the older GTA games.

Check out my bike! In my avatar. It filters through traffic like none other. You can whip it's tail around 180 degrees by hand in a second if you stuck in a jam! You can hop it over any curb or grass median, ride off the road into the woods and out the other side to evade the cops and road ragers! Jk. But those aspects do make it a great bike style to consider as part of your collection. Plus it's virtually bullet proof, as a blue printed 1970s 2 stroke it's indestructible and extremely cheap to fix. It's an apocalypse bike because it will move you through untracked terrain with ease across any continent and its street legal. It gets 50+ mpg It does not depend on a battery and can run without the electric system on if you want to ride in complete darkeness stealth mode.. For me right now it's my favorite, and anything heavier seems like a burden to me

Congrats on the bike. You will not be disappointed with the Honda reliability if you look after it.
A bit of talk about Harleys from people that don’t own one so I will throw in my
I’m not a Harley guy Not a fan of the engineering I think bikes should be built for speed and handling. And coming from sports bikes I’m guilty of saying harleys don’t handle or stop but after inheriting a HD Sportster I will eat my words.
Sure you have to ride the shit out of them and they still don’t match sports bikes standards but if you have the balls you can get the knee down on the bends, brake hard enough to get the back lifting and even pop the front wheel. And get the engine worked to 100hp pretty cheaply.
As for commuting in town yes a bagger like JS pictured would suck but put a sportster next to his CBR and the Honda will look like the fat ass.
And after 30years of all weather riding no rust but the aluminium has oxidised.
Biggest misconception I come across with the Harley now is people saying it must be the most comfortable of my bikes to ride. It is much better than the aggressive sports bikes but hands down the Ducati monster cafe racer style bike is the most comfortable and best alrounder.
TL:DR not a big fan of Harleys but try bikes for yourself before judging them what suits you might not suit others.

Wait wait wait wait. Are you trying to tell me you think a 100HP Harley would outperform my 200HP CBR in ANY way, shape or form?

Nope not at all. The cbr would do everything the Harley would do but better without changing out of first gear.
But a sportster Harley is a narrower bike especially at car mirror height which makes the easier to split lanes on.
Unless the CBR’s on the back wheel
Don’t have a cbr but the Yamaha equivalent as a track bike and is is crazy fast.

The mirrors on CBR's fold in when you wanna go hardcore on the filtering. A bike can only be as narrow as the human on it.
Hey I respect the love that people have for Harly's, but let's be honest; they're not better than anything else at anything other than being a cool status symbol.
A Greek friend in London used to ride one in Greece as a youth and he said it was like riding a huge dildo, the way women looked at you.
They're for show. Nothhing wrong with that. But let's not get them confused with practicality.

I would never buy a Harley as I inherited that one which means I would never sell it. And maybe why I have a little soft spot.
From an engineering stand point besides being bulletproof they suck in my opinions.
But an 200hp in-line four with the frame cradling the engine is wider than a v-twin mirrors in or not. Will I stop a good rider splitting lanes no but might be hard for someone less confident.
My favourite heavy traffic splitting bike was a Suzuki RGV 250 till the gearbox self destructed. Was like riding a playing card.

The old high power two strokes are. Used to ride them with fingers over the clutch in case the engine siezed and locked the back wheel up.
As I say, it doesn't matter how much narrower a bike is when there's a rider on it.

Yep pretty much what happened over taking a bus on the wrong side of the road at full noise a bearing went in the gearbox and locked the back. Kept it upright tho. And kept the bike so one day it will ride again, real classics now and still fast on the track.
True about rider size but I’m only a runt, keeps the power to weight up

A cheap forgiving one for you to hone your skills and then upgrade.
Not sure there availability in the US but I’ve put a few learners on Honda vtr 250’s or a bit cheaper Honda spada 250.
Very forgiving well handling bikes and being Honda’s will last and resell for near what you paid if you stay upright.

I think a common mistake people make is getting a big or powerful bike which they never learn how to use it’s full potential.
If you start small learn to ride the shit out of the bike using 100% of what it has to offer. When you do upgrade you will get more out of the bike than someone that jumped straight to big bikes. And are scared to grab a big handful of front brake or take off at full throttle. If that’s what you are into.

Here's my bike. Not my pic, but looks exactly like mine. I have lights and mirrors for it that might be nice to put on so I can make it legal and ride it through the city and practice at warehouses and construction sites. I wonder if your bike needs a seat to be considered road legal?

I'm into Harley, Rice burner, Enduro, and all kinds of bikes, even the ones with side cars. When I was in Florida I hung out with a few bike gangs once in a while and that was always pretty fun in a sinister kind of way. The Harley style gang was much more legit and mature. There was this Japanese street bike gang that opened up too and I knew a couple people from there. They were more of a wannabe gang that needed to make a name for themselves, which actually made them more dangerous. More dangerous because they were quick to fight over stupid shit and wouldn't fight like a real man.
Might be cool to start a bike gang with trials bikes and then we could do heists and use our rock hopping and tricks to get away and look cool while doing it!

For sure. Here in the Netherlands people usually learn on 500 or 600cc bikes
The requirements for getting a license are pretty strict here and usually involve about 10 hours of training the special maneuvers (emergency braking, slalom etc) off the streets and another 15 hours of practicing on the road.
We have an exam for the theory, an exam specifically for the special maneuvers, and an exam on the street
All in all even getting the license sets you back around €1500 to €1800, and thats if you pass everything in one go. People who have been driving for a long time usually need lots of exams because they have methods ingrained that are not compliant with todays regulations.
But i digress
My first bike was a 600cc chopper style bike with a drag bar and a 5inch extension on the front fork. I was nice to cruise around but it handled like shit.
So after two years I got a 900cc Honda Hornet. This bike basically scared the shit out of me, and I kept finding excuses to not use it. After a while I started riding it more and more but I got to the point that I thought riding maybe wasnt for me at all
Then I sold it and got my CRF250 Moto. That was a blast. Perfect for what I need it for. Going to work through congested traffic. So unintimdating that I rode it in winter and heavy rains. I rode that thing everywhere and put a lot of miles on it in two years. Now I feel way more comfortable on a motorcycle and the 250 isnt giving me enough joy of actually riding it. Its handy but perhaps it lacks character so I went for the 750 Honda.
Just wanted a V-twin again and this one is sorta light and nimble compared to more cruiser type bikes. Its also very comfy and suitbale for longer trips which the 250 wasnt really.
I also realized there is no need to ride bigger than what I can handle. I have plenty of time to grow into bigger bikes if I want.
Riding motorcycles is just something I do, its not really a big part of who I am, if you know what I mean. I dont identify with it as much as I do with surfing for example

Could suck the cock and drink every drop of man milk from every man to have ever dismounted this.

Found this sweet bike online thou. Pretty awesome colors IMO:

You can buy something that looks almost exactly like that i China that costs about $200 USD.
I tried to get one a few years back, via alibaba or something but because of shipping costs, and a stipulation that I’d have to order a minimum of 10- or 20 of them...I didn’t or couldn’t .
If you lived there though....

I used to know a guy in England that bought one of those Chinese motorbikes.
Poor bugger couldn't find a shop that would agree to work on it...

Ha, yeah I imagined that could be a possibility. Was it a shit build? Or was it just the parts and maint etc not complying with what was at home?

LOL, I think that goes without saying. Get what you pay for 'n all.
Probably constructed of all kinds of nuts and bolts that no other manufacturer uses and which crumble to dust when you put a spanner near them.

Fuk yeah. I met a guy while out cruising... He wore the whole YMCA Village People style typa tool belt outfit
I'd love to meet him again.
Sadly, grindr killed off the spontaneity of that kinda star.

You questioning the power, ability, and might of the CPC & PRC ?
Check Alibaba. I’m not saying it will be like a quality bike from the states or Eu or JP, or that it won’t be a nice looking piece of shit, but I am saying you can get one at about 200usd a piece. That was 10 years ago, but I bet there is something like it still for sale on baba.
Basically a bike with a motor - but you catch my drift, the drift of my bicycle.

There is a youtube channel called SRKcycles that I watch sometimes
Its basically a guy promoting the motorcycles he sells in his shop. But he tells about weird projects he does and he buys a couple of those ultra budget motorcycles just to see whats up
I think this will give you a good idea of what to expect
Picking my bike up today. So stoked
Weather is awesome, looking at 5 hour train ride and a 5 hour ride back on the backroads

$1,400! hmmm, I must’ve been mistaken and talking about a cheap ass dirt bike or worse then - or else I’ve got no clue what I was looking at for under 200.
Edit- I was looking at electric scooters from China back in the day, that’s it. Not bikes.

Was it pretty uncomfortable? Hows the bike handle? Maybe the shocks are a little too stiff?

No the standard saddles often suck for distance. An upgraded gel type one really is necessary IMO.

They're the most overrated pieces of shit ever. They're about 5-10x overpriced than where they should be.
I live in Milwaukee... It's ground zero Harley Davidson.

That CB looks nice. I bought a CB 1300 back in England - but the day I was going to pay for it - I had a run in with a Taxi and lost the front end on my CBR and smashed the engine case into a curb. So I had to cancel the sale unfortunately.
Shame, I always had a hardon for the old school CB's...

Those new ones are cool. Still air cooled. I wouldn't mind a 81-83 900F but they're pretty much all gone or turned to race/track bikes
