How should myc smell on agar?
    #26636991 - 04/29/20 02:45 PM (4 years, 8 months ago)

Sniffed one of my donor plates and it smelled kinda sweet and kinda piney I guess. I’ve heard it’s supposed to smell kinda like mushrooms/earthy but it’s been a while and I don’t remember how they actually smell. It’s on mea so maybe that’s most of the sweet smell? Or am I just dealing with a contam?

It depends on how colonized it is in my experience. If the plate is fully colonized, it usually smells like typical mycelium. If not, it can smell interesting depending on what nutrient sources are used. Visual indicators of contamination are better than smell when it comes to agar.

Okay, I’ll just make sure to keep up the transfers and keep an eye out for contams.

My nose is a bit bad, so I don't smell anything mushroomy on my plates until they're days after full colonization. Most contams on plates will be clearly visible
