It’s called the bug-a-salt. It makes short work of house centipedes. My girl sleeps with it on her night stand.

Horse and deer flies are indeed fucked, luckily you don't see them much in my neck of the woods. Instead, we get swarms of buffalo gnats that'll bite the shit out of you. Little bastards actually kill livestock.

Got bit by a black widow when I was a whippersnapper, wouldn't recommend it.

Certain times of year horse flies and March flies swarm around my house. They have a weakness though, the colour blue. They freaking love it. We put a big blue plastic bowl outside full if water which has some dish soap added (to reduce surface tension) and it'll half fill in a day. We catch 1000's of them and they leave us alone. Scoop them out of the bowl with a big stainless serving spoon with holes every day and chuck them on the garden as fertilizer.
I wish I'd thought of it, but all the credit goes to Mrs Northy.

I guess it’s possible. That bug-a-salt doesn’t actually work great for house flies IME. I imagine it would even less so for a monster horse fly.

Nice.
I find it does work for most flying anything... gotta get close sometimes or shopt multi-x's. mayflys are a good target.
I was given the yellow one for my birthday. Works well.
Awesome commercials too....
I put a screw in mine to block the safety so now all i have to do is cock it and squeeze 😎 Helps if multiple shots required
Oh and they sell a lazer sight too, got one for my step dad.😇

I’ve honestly only gone after one fly with it and it took 3 shots to kill it. May have been bad shots. On the other hand, house centipede legs go everywhere and it’s one and done from anywhere inside 3 feet.

There's a neat trick to deal with them. They sense warm dark silhouettes and naturally fly up and away. Exploiting this you get some kind of black object, a ball painted or sone black heavy rubber. Set it so it basks in the ghe sun and fashion a slanted roof for it for the flies to bump off. Finally set beneath this a tub of water with some dish soap in it to lower the surface tension so that when they fall in they drown.
You can buy these or make them. It really is effective.

You are right they lacerate, not regurgiate. Not sure where I heard that. Before wikipedia probably...
I used to be fascinated by insects as a child and used to read a lot and catch bugs/spiders all te time. They feast on blood not broken down flesh like a house fly. It would probably look like tiny ulcers or something if they to bite us.

I remember the first time I came across a garden spider I freaked out haha. Walkingnmy dog in tall grass. I went back and caught one, there was a group of like 5 of them. I took it home and my om identified it for me. She went to university for botany and entomology.

We don't get too many horseflies around here but deer flies can be pretty annoying sometimes when it's hot. I think if you kill one on you the rest smell it and follow you more. I try to catch them instead and rip off one wing.

When I lived in SE OK there was a restaurant that hung sandwich baggies full of plain water around the perimeter of the roof/overhang to keep flies away. They told me that the flies eyes see the refracting prisms and it sort of blinds them and keeps them at bay.
Why does a bag of water keep flies away? The fly bases his movement by light and the refracted light coming through the water in the plastic bag confuses the fly causing him to move on to a place that is easier on the eyes. And when you have a few thousand to deal with at one time, the easier, the better.Jul 11, 2010
I also got a suggestion to paint the ceiling of a porch on a patio of a house sky blue to keep wasps from building nests. It fools them into thinking it's the real sky and they like nests to be under and hidden. I never saw one wasp nest in 3 years after I painted it. Plus it looked awesome.
