Goin' All In: Need Advice 1

Since I aborted my first cake last night and decided I don't wanna keep paying 20-30 bucks for a grow-bag every time I wanna grow, I've decided to do what all the grown-ups do and start doing all the fancy shit you guys all do. The only fancy shit I've ordered for myself is some jar lids pre-outfitted with injection ports and breathy holes.
I've done my research on spawn, I think I'm ok there.
Is there any thread that contains good info on ratios for making substrate? All I can find are threads about making exact quantities, and I was hoping someone might have info on ratios rather than exact quantity recipes.
If anyone could give a rundown on maybe what the purpose of things like vermiculite/azomite/whatever might be, I could extrapolate on my own, but does anyone have any info like this?
Thanks in advance/

Just use coir, maybe some verm. No reason to go beyond that imo.

I think its 1:1 is the best ratio, 1 part Grain to 1 part Coir or Verm. Aka 50/50 blend.
I also recommend quart jars if you are planning on prepping grains yourself.

The common tub formula is 4 or 5 qts of grain and one brick coir, two qts verm.
So that's 4:10 or 5:10

Get wide mouth quart jars, throw away the lids/rings, replace with plastic. Get a sack of injection ports. Get a big ass bag of whole oats from any feed store or Amazon. Get a case of coir bricks, big bag of vermiculite and a pound gypsum. The oats, coir, verm and gypsum will provide for God knows how many mono tubs, 2 years worth for me. At least.
1 650g brick of coir + 2qts verm + 1 cup gypsum + 4.5qts water makes around 10qts substrate. Pasteurize, don't sterilize, substrate.
Formula to determine spawn + substrate in quarts to fill any tub to 3" is (width X length X 3)/57.75. A 66qt Sterlite 2028 tub (24x16) wants around 18qts total to fill to 3".
Spawn:substrate ratios run from 1:1 to 1:4. The greater the ratio the longer it takes to fully colonize.
Hmmmm..what else, boomer brothers?

Using math for substrate is unnecessary. You can swing the ratio so wildly and still succeed its not even worth the bother. I mean start with a tek first to get an idea, after that there's no need for anything but eyeballing it.

Just put a brick of coir in a 5gal bucket and pour 3qts of water on it. Get coir from the pet store or amazon, and grab a bag of vermiculite from Home Depot or Lowe’s. You don’t absolutely need Vern but it help so if your coir is too wet.
Qt sized mason jars (regular or wide mouth doesn’t matter) a pressure cooker some tubs and a bag of grain. Millet, oats, and wbs are my favorites in order. Then a bag of polyfil, agar and petris, and a 200qt tub for a still airbox. I wouldn’t dive all the way in with grain spawn if you’re not going to work with agar but that’s just me. If you’re not going to work with agar look up some of the brf teks or the original PF tek on here.
Good luck!

Vermiculite holds water really well. That’s it’s purpose here. Coir as well. It may have some minerals or micronutrients or something but mainly those two mixed together hold a good amount of water while remaining airy and loose enough for mushroom mycelium to tear through it, and they don’t provide a suitable place for spores to germinate so they won’t contam unless your spawn be whack. Which it will be often without agar work.
Your grains are what provide the nutrition, and spores can definitely germinate on them so that’s why you have to sterilize them and inoculate cleanly with your mycelium. This is the link if someone didn’t already put it up. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24144021
I know I used “it’s” incorrectly but I feel like there’s a legit argument for using the apostrophe. There, I said it Beatrice. Every time you’re implying ownership or whatevs you have it ‘’’’’. But when something belongs to or is part of “it” you’re expected to leave out the apostrophe because someone somewhere decided that the contraction of “it is” or “it has” takes precedence! Why must they be mutually exclusive?! We can all figure it out right? It’s not Mathematica where you have to have only one answer

Hear hear, brother. While we're at it, could we make a singular word for cattle? That way we can refer to one without assuming it's gender.

Thanks for everything, including Infrared's math and everything else, I got exactly what I needed. I'm going to jump into agar soon, but I have a few syringes left I hafta use, so I'ma use'em.
Also, to help with the "it's" issue...
It's "its" when implying the ownership of "it".
"After decapitating the penguin, Johnny waved its dick around wildly."
No apostrophe necessary.
Anyway, thanks again, you guys gave me exactly what I needed. And yeah, I'm down to rassle for an avatar. It's the only thing good in my life.
