tightly packed bulk substrate

i spawned 4 qts of rye berries to CVG substrate. however im pretty ocd when trying to get an even layer so i pat down the mixture excessively. the depth is around 2 1/4" but if I didn't pack it down so tightly, it could probably be at 3". So would I run into any problems with colonization/fruiting? Should I mix and loosen it up and risk doing more damage to mycelium or leave it alone? It has been 8 hours since I spawned to monotub.

It’ll be fine, might just take longer.

I pack the edges of my shoeboxes pretty well and sometimes the middle will be all colonized with a bare ring of coir around the edges for a couple days but then they catch up.

I remember when I started ~10 years ago everyone said to leave the substrate loose because it'll colonize faster. I remembered that back then every time I pulled a fruit up it'd bring a big chunk of sub with it. So this time around, my first few subs I just mixed em and let em go, took about 8-10 days to colonize, and again, big pieces of sub coming with the fruits. Soooo decided to try patting them down....And now they still take 8-10 days, but now the fruits don't pull off any sub with them! So I'm a pack it down SLIGHTLY kind of guy now. Don't press it down, but lightly pat the surface down to keep it even, and keep any pieces of grain/sub from poking out and to make sure there's no big air gaps inside the sub.

Keep 'em high and tight guys....
