some lions mane / hericium questions ...

Maybe there's an experienced resident Lion's mane cultivator here.
Searched through the threads trying to get some basic info to proceed.
I'm trying to grow Lion's mane using a bulk method. right mow I have some going using Pasty's Straw method with a few mods. If things colonize + fruit I'd like to move on to more traditional logs with either straw, wood pellets, or cardboard.
I am trying to extrapolate the best of what I have researched. My plan is:
- to colonize on oats and maybe wheat bran, or BRF?
- then after colonization, stuff in bags with pasteurized Hard Wood Fuel Pellets prepared in kind of a bucket tek kinda way.
- I plan on fruiting inside ( by slicing a few slits down the side ) possibly in a mono-ish style set up, or possibly a kind of shotgun with hydrated perlite to maintain humidity.
- hopefully they'll do alright since it'll be probably around 75f and above. heard they like slightly lower temps but don't know how crucial this is.
any advice or suggestions about grow techniques, substrate recipes, etc. would be much appreciated.

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.
Reason: Edible cutlivation goes here.

Hey, you can find a recent report of my experience with Lion's mane here https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26634496
Colonizing grains and inocculating pasteurized HWFP works, that's how I did it. But they need a shitload of fresh air and humidity, so a SGFC will not work. You will get something, but they will look quite pitiful, see here for example https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26529434#26529434 But some people somehow managed to do it with a fan pointed at the SGFC https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16100296
75f indeed sounds a bit too much. Especially in a SGFC temps will probably be even higher.

this is some great advice and info sporecap, thanks!
Looks like they are a bit fickle with their environment - I'm going to try and keep the FAE as high as possible, guess I will just go for it and hope for the best

if you can find soy hull pellets to add to your HWFP and mix those 50/50 you will get the best flushes hands down for LM by a lot.
and like sporecap pointed out.. forget monotub, or SGFC or anything like that for LM for best results. They need a lot of fresh air.

np. You can use soy hulls or soy hull pellets. Feed stores would carry it. You may have to call all of them to find it though as they all will not carry it. soy meal or whatever its called will not work right.

You'd be better off growing the lions mane out in open air than some kind of makeshift fruiting chamber that may or may not work. I sell ready to fruit blocks of lions mane at the farmers market all the time and people just put them on their counter and mist them once or twice a day. They send me pictures and the first flush always looks great and the second flush is usually a bit yellowed but OK.
I really don't think lions mane will perform all that well on straw although I can't say for sure because I haven't tried it. I always grow mine on half sawdust half soybean hull

How do you get a lion's mane block to fruit a second flush? I'm just growing them in a house at room temperatures.

I never do anything to them. I just wait. I throw them out after the second flush but some of the people I sell blocks to at the farmers market report getting up to 4 flushes with them out in open air and I'm pretty sure all they do is mist a couple of times a day while it's fruiting. I always tell them not to go crazy with the misting. You don't want the mushroom wet all the time.

Ok thanks. So you can mist LM's? I always thought they didn't like that.

Yes, when I was looking for it, like I said above I had to call ALL of the local feed stores. I live in a big farming area and only 1 local place sells it. I would also look at a 1 hour drive radius from your home to make sure you are getting all the feed stores. A 1 hour 1 way business delivery or pickup is nothing and not uncommon for deliveries and pickups in business. Maybe make a list with phone numbers. And call them all. Even if you find a source. Learn your local suppliers. You never know what's what down the road. And like Stromrider said there are people willing to help you call their people and hunt with you when you let them know you need(not want) to find it.
