Can I make prints from store bought mushies?

So I had some closed cup mushrooms in the fridge and thought i'd experiment and try to make a spore print or two (or none...)
Even as a noob I know this isn't usual (or best) practice, but as they were closed caps I thought there might be a chance that the spores might be hiding underneath the veil and waiting to be freed!
I attempted to make a print three times:
1. A few spores, but a lot of condensation
2. No condensation or spores
3. In true noob fashion, experiment three involved cutting the bottom 1/2cm off of the bottom, elevating the cap on a sterilised bottle cap, and then away we go (I know I know, but even though I felt sure this wouldn't work I wanted to see what happened anyway).
So there you have it. A perfectly flawless method of making sterile spore sprints, following the scientific method to the letter...
Why did my prints not work? I am curious as to whether store bought mushies can/are ever used to make prints? I could see its pointless for store bought open caps, but I thought this might have some hope given that the spores were buckled up in there (and actually did get some minor success) - Though perhaps closed caps aren't mature enough to develop enough/any spores, and that's the catch?
I look forward to your input!

Haha, okay take it easy I said I was experimenting! I wanted to see if anything happened at all.

Since they'd be pretty dirty you wouldn't want to make a spore syringe from that print anyways.
You can always clone to agar and store the live culture and take prints when you fruit it out

Yeah making a clone to agar from a store bought would be best. Gourmet mushrooms are usually super monocultured and tested to find best variety for taste and yield. Going back to those spores would reset that whole process and unless you plan on fruiting 100 different cultures to find a good one again it'd be best just to transfer some center stem flesh to agar and call it a day.

Wait did you cut the bottom of the stem off?
Also depends what mushroom probably.

Thanks for the depth, much appreciated. I kept seeing Agar pop up here and there and have been curious. I guess now is the perfect to to exercise my curiosity.Quote:

Yeah I cut the stem out, and the bottom half of the cap; all in aid of setting those little spores free! It felt quite savage, and clearly pretty pointless too haha.
Thanks for the support everyone.

I attempted to take samples from some crimini mushrooms from deep inside the stem, and put them on agar. Even though I was super carefull and sterilized my scalpel multiple times after carefully cutting away to outside.....I still got nothing but mold on my agar plates.
However.....I was able to succesfully get mycelium growth from spores from completely DRIED psilocybe cubensis despite being told I was crazy for even trying it by many people. This hobby is all about experimenting and having fun :-)

When you clone, first tear the mushroom open with your hands. Then you just drag your sterilized scalpel to get a piece of virgin tissue from the inside. If you cut thru from the outside, you push contaminants inside
