Hi Pickers
Has anyone had issues with police checking driving distances when picking ?
Corona virus restrictions
My spot is an hour away and I am hoping to avoid 1600 $ fine

As far as I can tell the "Stay at home directions" on this page: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/state-emergency are the ammendments to law that enforce the stay at home rules.
I can't seem to find anything in there about distance driving from home. Of course, that won't prevent a police officer fining you, but if you wanted to fight it...
I'm travelling 30 mins to spots. I actually find hunting quite a mindful activity and being holed up around my house now for weeks is not good for my mental health. Exercise for the brain needs new/nicer environments!
I have found there's quite a difference sometimes on how the actual law is written (above link) verses the media spin that politicians put on things. Usually it seems the pollies are talking about harsher rules/laws than the Chief Med Officer is writing up. I'm sure some of this is to soften the blow when laws get ratcheted up.

Question to experienced pickers: I'm finding quite a lot of L Ceres, Oudemansiella, "little brown mushrooms", and other fungi in the areas that I'm looking.
Is general fungal activity a good sign? If I'm looking around in mulched and woodchipped areas and finding non active mushrooms, should I keep looking there for P Subs?

I'm not experienced at all, but I found success by looking in areas that already had lots of mushroom growth. I would have found hundreds of other types of mushrooms in the area before I stumbled across a couple of patches of subs.

L.Ceres is a good indicator species for subs. Keep looking in those types of areas and your bound to find them eventually.

Hey guys, i've got a question There's only really one park in walking distance from my house, so far no actives but plenty of l. ceres and p. micaceus. My question is, is it possible that there are p. subaeruginosa present that just are yet to fruit this early in the season? or should I give up and find other hunting grounds?
cheers

after a week or so of fruitless searching over insane amounts of parkland... I came home after work and took a glance out into my backyard. welp, they've been right under my nose this whole time!!

scales are out of battery unfortunately. I'll make an essential trip to Coles later and update once I know the wet weight!

Nice backyard find!
I revisited my local park today where I found 2 patches yesterday and was able to find a 3rd patch today with a few small subs.

Now's a really good time which should consistently get better each week until the peak of the season. If you were to go out tomorrow morning at first light (my favorite time to go hunting) and went park to park around Melbourne and checked the dampest, shadiest areas with the right terrain then you should really find a lot by the end of the day.
I think the most important thing is to not miss the peak of the season (lately I've found it to be the 8th of June for shadier patches and 21st of June for more exposed patches) so you really want to make sure you're made yourself free to go hunting by that time.
From the 8th of May until the peak of the season the mushrooms should be prevalent enough to make it well worth going out go find them. And if you haven't found a satisfactory amount for yourself by June then you can send me a message and I'll point you in the right direction.

Any Victorian snake experts here? Haha....
I was hoping to get out for the first time this weekend and since someone posted a picture of an encountered copperhead I'm freaking out!
Any tips or advice? I should I wait for it to get a bit colder so they fuck off to hibernation?
Gossip girl out xo

I’m by no means a “snake expert”, but they frequent my area and I’ve come across two tiger snakes so far while out hunting this year. Both they and copperheads aren’t really aggressive if you leave them Alone..
All I can say is; avoid Listening to music through headphones while traversing through forested areas so you can hear movement around you. When making your way though dense foliage or tall grass, always keep your eyes on the ground where your stepping and try to rustle some noise to scare them away. If you spot one, calmly back off or make a little noise to scare it away. Never corner them.
Though if you’re really worried about snakes you could always wear Gumboots.
