Learning to ID, please help. (Non-Active)o9^
    #26634628 - 04/28/20 03:12 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:Found growing in a patch of moss on a walking trail in central Alabama. It had one friend with it, but no others.

Gills: Gills appear to be crowded. I am still learning gill identification and  the differences between attached, adnexed, etc; I'm not sure how these would be classified. I also noticed these gills seem to be more symmetrical than other mushrooms I have seen, and every other gill is tiny.

Stem: Stem is fibrous and hollow. Pretty sturdy though.

Cap: Cap is convex, dry, and slightly rough.

Spore print color: I know this is important, but I just started the print and was excited to go ahead and post this. Will update when complete.

Bruising:
No noticeable bruising.

Other information: Tiny mushroom, only about 1.5 cm tall and wide.

My field conclusion, in the absence of a spore print, was Hypholoma sublateritium, or "Brick cap." I'm working out of a feild guide to mushrooms in the southeast, and their pictures and description mostly match my observation.

Was I close? What do you look for in these photos and description to help you identify it? Any help/advice is appreciated.

Looks like a Russula. Throw it hard at a solid surface to confirm. Post pics of results.

It's a russula sp. Taste it to check edibility.

Russula spp. are very brittle and will shatter if thrown at a hard surface

It is a Russula, red Russula requires microscopy to determine the species and even then it is extremely difficult.

I don't think an amanita vaginata would fare any better 😁

Yeah, I shit you not, that’s a real thing. It’s actually pretty amazing how they shatter.

another way Russula is easy to id is by running your fingers across the gills and they will break easily into pieces and the short fat white stem with white gills.
