what do you do to reduce contamination risk?
    #26633922 - 04/28/20 09:26 AM (4 years, 8 months ago)

So last night I spent a couple hours hanging painter's plastic around my grow room in the basement. Plastic walls and plastic on the ceiling so no mold spores in the basement can't come in. Overkill? Maybe. But my grow room is a bit small anyway so I need a somewhat clean work environment outside of it. And someplace I can put on clean room garb once I get to the place where I start using that. I know at this point that the main source of contamination is gonna be me so, after I get home and before I go into my clean space, I take a shower, wash my hair, and then put on clean clothes. I'm wondering what ya'll do to reduce contamination risk. I probably won't be able to afford a laminar flow hood until this summer sometime.

Proper agar, LC & grain preparation.

Then good sterile technique during inoculation.

Proper substrate preparation depending on your recipe.

Beyond that you can be sloppy af and be forgiven.

For example. I'm at the end of my growing season. This is one of several tubs to wrap it all up.  I post these up in up in a carpeted room which I vacuum and bring all sorts of other outside contams in the room like every day. Most of the day the tub doesn't even have a lid on top.

Still have only had to toss one tub out of about 43 tubs I've done since fall.

My point is you don't have to quarantine your stuff as long as you understand and utilize good sterile tech as much as possible. It all depends on your spawn, most of the time

Same level as you, prefer safe than sorry although I use it for my clean room too.

I've slowly been removing a lot of the overkill steps I used to take in my mush work.

Grow area is clean but not any cleaner than the rest of my house.

I used to shower and put on clean clothes before all agar work but now I just shower like normal and if I work in my SAB 12 hours later I just wash my hands thoroughly.

I used to wipe everything down with ISO but I ran out of paper towels awhile ago so its just ISO on the hands and work like normal. The only prep I do is turn off any fans and let the SAB sit for 15-20m with all my stuff packed in it.

What I focus on now is clean agar going into properly prepped gain and spawned with field capacity coil/verm. I've only had one tub go trich this year so far and I knew it was going to before I even spawned the jars. I used an untested LC that I had made with agar that wasn't ready. Pretty much set myself up for failure by being lazy.

I'm still very much barely an amateur at all this but when I started focusing on the basics - the quality of my work went up exponentially.

Are you just sprinkling coir on once there’s a lot of knots??

As far as contamination, I do the bare minimum.

I’ve got carpet, my dogs are in there a lot cuz its warm, rarely clean the room.

SAB is the most important tool. Even in filthy conditions you can pull clean grows. Now I did recently have a big increase in plate contamination but it’s from not moving my SAB for 3 months and having the towel under the grate covered in old wbs, bits of agar, whatever.

I finally cleaned it all out and it’s back to normal.

Like they said it’s 99% about spawn.

Huh. Gonna give that a whirl next time. It just looks like it makes a great climate in those pics.

It's my understanding that when the knots start forming into primordia they pull the moisture from the surface. Have the coir on top or whatever casing AIDS in that process by making it much easier to keep high microclimate as well as being easy to mist and keep hydrated without pooling water accumulation.

as well as preventing the opposite which would would be drying too rapidly which requires too frequent of misting which can cause matting sometimes.

Also, I never say fuck it and add that late case prior to knotting at 100%

All that does is delay pinning for upwards of 7-10 days

I think it helps more knots that are directly on the surface grow into promordia that normally wouldn’t if they didn’t have that thin layer cover them.  It’s hard to say how effective it is though because it’s not like you can go back and show the same sub  without the late casing

Lol faht you sure can't but if I didn't get better results than not doing it then I surely wouldn't do it.

Works great with unmod tubs that are in a room that's prone to drying out surfaces due to the low RH combined with frequen air currents.
