Lawn pans mother lode(at least to me)
    #26634197 - 04/28/20 01:29 PM (2 months, 10 days ago)

The past two days have been rather productive when it comes to lawn pans.

Earlies this week I was checking some of my usual spots and a smattering was located, nothing big.

While returning home from work I ran across a patch growing in recently sodded lawns.  I made a trip back to do some picking.(no visual documentation of these)

The next day I’m returning home from work and I locate what can only be described as a rare find(for me anyway).  A lawn strip between the sidewalk and a major roadway was filled with more lawn pans than I had seen in a long while. I filled up a coffee thermos and a tupperware container.

Here’s my finds from that expedition.

I also found this gem of a lawn pan.

A very beautiful example.

But what made it stick out to me was the wavy cap.  A rare find when it comes to lawn pans.

I decided to get a bigger container and go back to the spot.

There was so many there was no way I could get them all.  Also paranoia set in because hunting in a public setting does have risks, but this is what I found.
Here’s the sneak peak.

Here’s the haul in its entirity.

A very nice haul indeed.  It took about four hours to print everything.

I also made another rare find.  Two sterile lawn pans.

I put them next to a potent one for comparison

Here’s a gill shot of the first one.

Here’s the tops of their caps.

Here’s a gill shot of the second.

I’m sure a foe or two made it in but for the most part about 99% of the prints will be black.

Well, thought I’d share.

The aftermath.  Gotta figure out how to dry them.
I got ideas, we’ll see.

Even the sterile ones printed.

Sorry about the photo blurriness.

lay them out on newspaper or something similar and blow a fan over them, preferably on something that will let air circulate all around them.

send me a pm if you are willing to send me a few specimens for study. literally 2-3.

You could also use a paper bag with the corner cut to allow air pressure to release creating air flow through the bag evoke using a heater to blow heat into three path of the fan creating a chamber with flowing warm air. They should dry fast

IMO you have cints or something similar based off that monster that has a perfect looking stem

The current paradigm is saying that cints dont grow in lawns or well manicured grass.    Thank you for the drying suggestion.

That one is a beauty.

I hope to be able to help figure this out,  it could be they are an undescribed or misidentified species, Panaeolus olivaceous is often mistaken for Pan. foenescii, I am currently requesting specimens for study from both grass and manure observations.

Return trip documentation.  I was worried that I wouldnt find anything because my mortal enemy, the lawnmower man, had hit my spot.  I was pleasantly surprised that there was as many survivors as there was.  I had to resist the urge to go on a pin rape spree and just stick to the bigger ones.

Still got a decent haul.

Found another sterile pan.

I also attempted to document the blueing and bruising on some of my examples.

Some of them might be fanciful thinking on my part.

If you zoom in on this one’s stem you will see something that appears to be a very, very light blue.

This one it’s more pronounced

.

I just liked this one.  It’s a good specimen.

Gill shot.

With a little luck I’ll be going back friday to a huge flush.

Today’s hunt.

The haul.

Found in various spots.  They are all over.  They were growing in spots I hadn’t seen them prolific in years.

The holy grail of lawn pans.  Ones that exhibit the blueing reaction blatantly.  I knew they would show up eventually.

When you finally see this reaction you know that the hunting was worth the effort.

A close up on the stems.

And another great find.

A siamese twin.

Definitely a good omen.  Discovered next to some of the blueing pans.

Top of caps.

One more undershot.

There were a few questionables that are being sporeprinted.

And I’m about to hit another spot.

This is two days after the last hunt.  I had to sneak a bike ride into the inner city after work.

At first the hunt was looking like it would be bunk, but that didn’t last.

This is the haul in it’s entirety.

A few puffballs were also found.

This spot has been very prolific over the years, but it can be nerve racking because it is highly public and very visible.  But well worth it.

Some of the fatties.

And this is the first time they have ever shown the blueing reaction at this spot.

And boy, did they.

All mushrooms shown were either bruising or blueing.

Close up of the big pile.

Close up of the little pile.

Thank you.  I’ve been successfully hunting these for about 12 years.  The first year I joined everybody was out hunting lawn pans.  I feel kind of bad that I didn’t document my finds over the years.  I’m trying to make up for lost time, more or less.

I wanted people to see blueing lawn pans so they know they are indeed active and out there.

Man its a shame lawn pans are loaded with bioaccumulant toxins from exhaust, runoff, herbicides, pesticides and heavy metals. They're so weak too compared to poo pans also. This find is great for documentation purposes but I hope you wouldn't actually ingest these that would be stupid.

Oh this is based on 0 evidence and conjecture only. I'm just assuming some fungi are bioaccumulators and with god only knows what being sprayed on lawns these days i would hate for something to happen to people haplessly eating pans from rando lawns for a weak high. Prolly better to print for trades and grows no?

Sure, there’s some risk.  Most of what I’ve heard though, is anecdotal.  You stalked me to this thread, let’s see some studies.

You’re from the old school, CITATIONZ PLZ.

I found these banded mottongills all over town this last weekend. I was searching for ovoids

Gonna be heading out later to look again. Honey fungus, a pearl oyster, mottingills, and some other look alike decomposer I can’t identify atm. I’m in some good spots but I just can’t find an ovoid

Just a little input; there won't be any more toxins in lawn cinctulus than dung cinctulus unless you pick them in polluted ground, i.e. roadsides, industrial land etc., and, while I haven't seen any studies on it, I think the reason why some people say they're less potent, it's because they have mixed collections with a god deal of foenesecii in it when picking lawn cinctulus. Most lawn cinctulus collections I identify are mixed. This one is not, however. Again, great find!
