Syringe Clogs

Doing my first grow. I made spore syringe from prints I ordered. Let them sit for 48 hours. Every time I stick syringe in my BRF filled jar the syringe gets clogged with Verm or BRF. Am I using the wrong size needle or what. I managed to finish but I ended up using 4-5 CC per jar because I had to push so hard.

4-5cc isn't bad, don't sweat it. I believe for brf and just spores you'd want to use a thinner gauge needle, probably 20 or less. For LC I use 18 and recently got some 16 since I was getting clogs occasionally with those.

So here is how I avoid problems with clogging, because no matter what you do, it happens. First things, make sure you are flame sterilizing in between jars. You don't have to sterilize between inoculation points in the same jar, just when you move from one jar to the next. This will not only ensure a clean transfer, the heat will cook the verm inside the needle. This will make the needle easier to push through. Next tip is to avoid pressing too hard against the side of the jar. I know, I know "but everyone says to put the needle tip against the side of the jar!", and you should. BUT, the verm/BRF mix is kinda gluey when wet, so it will actually seal the needle tip against the side of the jar if you press too hard. 99% of the time when I have a "clog", it is because of this. Just back off the side a tiny bit(just enough to not seal it), and you should be ok. Also never press the plunger if it won't go easily. Give her a lil shake, as spores will also clump and clog a needle of they are not broken up. Sometimes I have to shake almost constantly to avoid this(esp. with some strain cubie spores).Avoid pulling air back into the syringe to clear it, as it can possibly erase all your sterility efforts and pull contams into the syringe itself(unlikely, but possible). Hope this helps.

I'm using 18G. Think I should try 16G? I also have sharp pointed needles. I see some use the blunt tips.

Have never had an issue with an 18G. I know some people do...You can try a 16G, no harm in it all. The only thing about a blunt tip needle, they aren't always easy to find. Well maybe not in today's world....Any more ?'s shoot 'em over. Lates-
