Love this tek with millet, will try it with oats because they are a lot cheaper, but for a newbie like me its awesome, even a jar that i forgot to shake and shaked after inoculation is full colonized in 2 weeks with no more shaking.

So I just ran my second batch of rye using tek like this. As suggested by Paul's book.

Yesterday I made 7 jars.
240ml rye (1cup)
180-200ml H²O
1/8tsp gypsum
1/4 tsp chalk

Pressure cook 70 min. Shake immediately after the pressure is out of the PC.

They came out tad dry due to the calciums.

The book says that! little did I know. Add 10% more H²0 Paul says.

I did that today.

240ml rye (1cup)
210-220ml H²0
1/8tsp gypsum
1/4tsp chalk.

They came out almost perfect. I'm glad I tried again and wrote things down and listen to advise from Paul & sannyTies.
Maybe I'd do 210-215ml next time. There was one or 3 burst kernels.  That's it. Like I said. Almost perfect.

I love this tek. Love millet & rye.

Oats I havent tried like this yet alone.

Thank you so much. This is a treasure to me.

I urge anyone to try this simple tek. It's so easy a cave man can do it. :whateverhuman:

Good deal hobbit and marvin! So glad your enjoying this, when we can make spawn this simple and perfectly it gives us time and the Energy to do other things, no matter how crazy they maybe.  I swear I have wasted entire sacks of wbs, oats, corn, rice and other types of grains TRYING to get them prepared right. So when we lock in on a grain we can , 1, find all the time and 2, prepare properly, it's worth sticking with it.

Alot of my personal failures in cultivating mushrooms have come from improper hydration of grain and or substrate.  I'm quite sure most of us can agree to that.

Moisture content Is God.

A great place to start with oats is 1 cup oats to 2/3 cup water. I found I always wanted a bit more in the jar after so I came to this conclusion for each 1/2 cup dry oats put 1/3 cup water. This works for all size jars too!

So with that being said just like all these teks and all these recipes we , as the cultivator,  must improvise to improve on these methods for our own needs. Like the addition of gypsum and calcium carbonate for example.  That shit binds up the water so it will come out a touch on the dry side.

Well. I'm stoked for yall to be successful in all your endeavors ! It's much more enjoyable to not have to worry about if your spawn is gonna turn out good or not.

Oh and I find the calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate really helps tighten up the moisture content or something bcuz I rarely get burst grains , like a few per jar of bag. A burst kernal is what is gonna contaminate, even when its colonized , so it's a really good thing to have less burst grains.

And the oats, the damn oats, I been using them in bags or half gallon jars , but really bags because the oats swell up even after a simmer or soak , I'm never getting the level just right. The jar will be too full or not full enough,  so I use oats in bags, i use 3lbs to 5lbs bags, whatever the spp. Or project is.

I followed this tek and have my first grain jars on the way! Hoping the use the best of the 2 to G2G into oats. Seems like they're coming along nicely

This recipe looks great, any tips on getting it to work in a pasteurizer? My pressure cooking capabilities are inadequate for the amount grainspawn required

Can anyone confirm the weight of 350ml of millet?  I do not have a good way to accurately measure volume but I do have a pretty good scale.

thanks!

Just to clarify — what is the weight of 350ml of millet in grams?  ml is a measure of volume, I'd like to know what the equivalent measure is in grams.  In other word — what is the effective density of millet?  Thanks.

I know I'm extremely late to this thread, but I just wanted to say: SannyTIES, I tried this tek today, and it has revolutionized the way I prepare my spawn jars. Today, I got 14 jars ready to knock up in half the time it would normally take me. Thank you for the excellent process, my dude.

Hey sorry to bump a old thread here..
This is awesome tek!
I was curious if this same method would work with WBS? Just leave sun flower seeds in and all..?

Old thread, but I also read it earlier this week.

Just ran 250g millet to 135ml water and it seems to have worked out very nicely. Needed breaking up after cooking while still hot, but surprisingly wasn’t overly sticky/clumpy and minimal burst grain.

Weigh a cup of dry WBS, hydrate appropriately and re-weigh. Theoretically the difference in grams should be around the correct amount of water to use (in ml’s) for a no-prep.

I suspect the varying grain size in WBS might be more difficult to hydrate uniformly than straight millet, but would probably work fine. Especially considering many have success simply soaking their wbs and PC’ing.

Ill do some trial and error!

I also tried this tek with 10 jars instead of 7. Only thing I changed was the pressure cook time. I did a hour and 35 mins. I noticed with this time the millet wasnt as stuck to the bottom of the jars as the 65 min batch was..

Where do you get your millet?

I have tried probably ten 2lb~3lb bags of WBS with this and they always come out bacterial.  No mold, just lots of condensation after a while (bacterial).  I have tried different PC times up to 3.5 hours — you would think nothing would be alive after that.  Don't know where the bacteria is coming from...

Your sterile technique, agar, or GE filters.

Since bacteria don't fly around in the air, I would think it's not the filter.  Also would be a little surprising if all the filter on my bags are bad.

Agar and sterile technique: if it's one of those I would expect to see contam in my agar plate, but most of my agar plates look clean, so not quite sure what is going on.

Bacteria…doesn’t exist in the air?

Post pics of your plates, bags, and jars. It’s one of them.

This is what my plates typically look like.  This one isn't completely uniform so I would do one more transfer until I get a completely uniform-looking plate to put to grain.

These are how my 2lb bags always turn out.  They start out with dry looking grains and over time with colonization it starts to have condensation and become really wet-looking.

Bacteria can attach to dust particles, etc but they don't tend to just fly off into the air by themselves.  My plates don't seem to have bacteria so it's weird that my bags always get them...

Your plates don’t look good and your bags don’t look good because of that. That looks like you got some mold enmeshed nicely in there.

Regardless of them being able to exist on dust, vapor, or water droplets…that’s kind of a large makeup of your environment and bacteria is everywhere.

What features do you look at to identify mold in those plates?  It just looks like tomentose mycelium to me... also no visible bacterial spots in the plates at all. What specifically stands out to you about those plates that signifies contamination?
