130g isn't bad.  I was late in the season and while I haven't dried them I would be lucky to have 3g.  Nothing beats the thrill of the hunt when you find your own mushroom though and I have to say I have really enjoyed the sense of community on here.

It's like the Fantastic Fungi documentary said, we are all connected through the web of mycelium.

Inspired by Joe Rogan I am going to book myself a session in a sensory deprivation tank this Friday and take most of what I have left.  Wish me luck!

Super interested to hear how this goes. I can honestly think of nothing better.

It has been a fun season for me after years of abstinence. Learned a lot from all you guys. If this was a crap season then I’m looking forward to next year especially since I had fruit appear in my backyard this year.

Let’s hope we don’t have another drought in Auckland.

Bobbit - You'd be better to colonize woodchips with the spawn and then distribute the woodchips into nature. The reason being that rats and birds love the rye grain and are likely to eat it all before the mycelium gets a chance to spread.

The correct nomenclature is Psilocybe aucklandiae.
aucklandii is incorrect because the ii ending is masculine.
In Latin, city names are considered feminine so the original nomenclature was incorrect, it was changed to aucklandiae to reflect the femininity of the city name.

The species is not considered native, probably introduced and is very closely related to or possibly the same as P. zapotecorum.

Just while we are discussing latin mushroom names.

Does anyone know what the latin name for the south island blue meanie is?  I know this common name refers to lots of mushroom species but this is the south island one that grows in grass paddocks.

I would like to google pics so that I can ID two local mushroom species.

Blue meanie = Panaeolus cyanescens ,

i think i read someone say that BM's in NZ are Weraroa or Subsecotioides

However i think a new common name should be adopted as BM is good for Pan cyans.

I also am a proponent of calling Subs copper tops and not gold tops, I think Cubes are called gold tops, and copper tops suits the latin name, with aeruginosa signifying verdigris

P.aucklandiI won't touch cardboard, and when I first started hunting (in the good old days when they were just called 'blue meanies') a 'golden rule' was 'if its growing from wood, you have the wrong mushroom'.

I don't know if you'll ever get to the bottom of what has been called 'blue meanie'....

Likely candidates are; as both of these bruise blue and grow in grasslands:
Panaeolus cyanescens
Panaeolus cinctulus  --->  2 posts of this shroom this year on this thread! (they're out there).
..  to confuse things more:  P. cinctulus used to be P. subbalteatus & some folk on the online refer to them as 'subbs'...

But could also be
Psilocybe semilanciata
These are well known around Dunedin, and @Littleman found a bunch up North this year... (we just don't see them on the forums very much)  Surely they are all around NZ, including Canterbury too... Not much blueing on these, though...  so "blue meanie" seems unlikely.

It could ALSO be our old friend subs:  they could grow in paddocks & grassland that border woodland... as long as there is fallen wood to feed them...
and of course Weraroa - more lkely in the bush- but same deal. However, I don't think these are found south of Wellington.

Good luck on your quest & I look forward to some pics of 'Blue Meanies' perhaps next season.  :sherlock:
Also:  I have had some great experiences on Psilocybe mushroonms, while sitting alone in the dark.  I reckon an isolation tank will be fantastic...  as long as you get a good long time in there to ride it out!!  Let us know.

Thanks, I don't think these are subs based on the habitat.  Based on the pics I think Panaeolus cyanescens and Psilocybe-semilanceata are the most likely although we all know that mushrooms have a lot of individual variation.  From memory they were fairly small with gold tops, much like smaller subs growing in grass paddocks.  Canterbury high country and the Mackenzie country were areas mentioned.

I would love to find a Weraroa but don't think they are down here.

I suspect I don't have enough mushrooms to try out the isolation tank in full anger this season.  The info I have read says you need a few sessions to learn how to do it so I don't think I will launch into full psychedelic rebirth in the first session.  I will however, try a decent ABV edible...

I told the people at the isolation tank place that I wanted to destress and expand my consciousness.  They said they knew lots about consciousness expanding so I am keen to know what they have to say.

'Psilocybe-semilanceata' is often referred to as 'liberty caps' or 'libs' which seems shared amongst English speaking hunters. . .

I reckon them Entoloma hochstetteri should be called blue meanies. . . 'cause they are blue (blue). . . And make you feel ill rather than high (meanie). . .

This sounds most likely to be liberty caps: Psilocybe semilanciata.  In the UK, its known that they grow above 400m... so your habitat definitely fits.
Checkout littleman's posts this year: he had some great finds including liberty caps.

Checked all my spots today and got a singular Weraroa, looks like they are all wrapping up for the year. Fuck knows what I’m gonna do with my time now haha. Got 8 grams dry in total - fuck all for you big players but stoked to have had successful hunts especially finding Weraroa. Awesome getting to know you cunts over the season. Peace out homies and stay cooked.
