These are the babies, I watched them grow from tiny gold dots on the mycelium to this.

All the way to these.

A taste of the harvest.

I would call these Psilocybe cyanescens.

Yeah, i can agree with that. Very surprised that psilo cyans are in NZ, very cool!

Can the great woody one talk about what time of year? I assume if I put what I have into a wood chip washing basket now I won't see anything until next year?
Any harm in mixing in a bit of potting mix?

I was talking to a mate today, reminiscing about the 90s. He said that in the south island he used to pick blue meanies in grass paddocks. Does anyone know what the Latin name is for this mushroom so I can look at pics and work out how to ID it? I know blue meanies refer to multiple mushrooms in NZ but these are the south island, grass paddock ones.

You would have to wait at least a year. I think some potting mix would be good!

The 90's, what a great time to be alive! Im not really sure because as you said blue meanies people call several different mushrooms. Maybe liberty caps in this case, but id think it would be one which would bruise prominently. Someone else here would probably be able to better tell which species it was likely to have been.
The OG blue meanies are panaeolus cyanescens, which grow in cow dung.

Some more cultivation questions: Is it worth making a slurry for the washing basket of wood chips or should I just put what I have between wet chips.
Is it worth getting a mushroom kit like this. I think oyster mushrooms grow on wood so that would be the kit to get: https://www.oderings.co.nz/Shop/seeds-bulbs/grow-your-own-mushrooms/Oderings-love-these-simple-use-Mushroom-kits-__I.12261__C.10508__N.84

Yeah seems like we've got a few people keen...... lets meet back here in autumn and post our results. I already have a few bins going and have been burying stems in various spots through my garden...... slipped a few in the missus' strawberry planter.... she'll be less than impressed if that one works. I'll be pissed if nothing works and I have to drag my ass to Mangere to raid the patches there.... Those chocolates look delicious doland, I was thinking of making up capsules but last time i just ate them dried straight and it wasn't so bad.... (not that great either) how much you put in each one?

Not really, they mostly just got to this stage before starting to rot.

I believe these are the only cyans I've found, from my first year on the shroomery

I grew these last season. . .

I had a few 'experts' telling me I was growing cyans. . .
Until I showed them the mushroom I cloned them from. . .
Environmental impact on pheno's has more impact than many expect. . . P.sub used to be confused for P.australiana and another I can't recall (RTR will know. . .) which required DNA sequencing to determine. . .

only real way to tell would be dna sequencing a sample of the mushroom. as you mention Bobbit, 2 many sub phenotypes that look similar to cyans.

Yeh I ate some dry Weraroa on the weekend and had sub dust yesterday, I think they taste alright dry / ground so not a biggie for me, just wanted to make a dosed stable storage solution + it’s kinda dope. Chocolate also is acidic so it’s supposed to give it some extra boost.
I made half 0.1g 70% cacao for microdosing and half 0.2g fruit and nut - I had 1 of each + the dregs in lemon and ginger tea and was pretty high, like a deep stoned with some visuals, closed eye action, hyper focus, body buzz, a bit of time dilation - it was pretty dope.

An undulating or wavy pileus margin is common in many Psilocybe and cannot be used to define a species.
Microscopy could bring you closer to an accurate identification, a DNA sequence comparison with the type species sequence is needed to be certain.

Thanks for the advice and photos everyone! Reckon I’ll try and mix a bit more wood chip in with mine and try to expand the colony. What sort of wood chip are you using in that photo there Bobbit?

I rechecked all my spots and found these three bad boys. Very happy, will go back for another look later.
Habitat:

Actives

There are two suspected non actives in my ID thread if anyone wants to take a look and offer advice. I hold out some hope for 2.
