Just checked out a spot I’ve consistently been finding small amounts of subs this season. It was completely bare apart from one other and this. It looks way chunkier than what I’m used to finding and the stem doesn’t have any blue veins but it seems to be blueing a bit around the edges. Is this a wavy top or just a really big sub?

Spending some time in queenstown and surrounding areas next week, is it possibly too cold for anything to grow there? I've heard people say that mushrooms won't grow after frost, and I've heard people say the opposite too. Any insight?

A sad old season!  C-town has been incredibly dry... one or 2 bursts of rain; not enough to kick off any great amount of action; and some hard frosts to boot.
Most of the patches I know have been completely baron this year, and even non-actives are sparse...  only just now, we are starting to get some consistent precipitation; and I've started to see those few producing patches crank out a few more pins.
he's a noice, but small cluster:

To add to RogertheRetard's comment about the other species: P. cyanescens & P. allenii - I think I may have come across both, but who knows- they could all be subs
Here are some from 2019 that I think might be Psilocybe cyanescens (because the caps were wavy + they blued up somthing crazy):

Here are some from 2018/19 that I think might be P. allenii
(because the colour & shape of caps was not the same as other subs - more olive green when growing & drying to a whiter colour)

ah those were the salad days...  finding lots of shroomies:
here is
June 20  2018            vs          June 20  2020
vs
(over 100g dried)        vs.          (about 8g dried)

2020 you have been a real kick in the dick.
:cockafuck:

How thrilling it is to hunt psilocybes!                                                                            ... and how beautiful the finds!  :sun:

Okay well I stand happily corrected re cyan's and have also found some subs that have the wavey cap.

Because of the wide variety of size, shape etc of the subs I've found I just assumed they were all the same, and some subs do the wavey thing don't they?
On topic of 2020 being a crap season... it gives me hope. This is my first season so I guess good to start at a low point, it can only get better from here right? Unless this is the new normal in which case I'm going to have to start watering the patches myself.

Have to agree with your comment about hope Sam. For a dry season I’ve still had some luck.

This mornings finds

Left quite a few pins behind, hoping they don’t get disturbed.

When I showed pics of the subs I grew last year to some 'pros' they told me they were Cyans, until I showed them the pic of the fruit I cloned. . .

Pheno's vary greatly with these species. . . As RTR suggests. . . DNA is the only way to know for sure. . .

You can dry bits of manky ones. . . however, I tend to distribute them in 'hopeful' places on the way home as any part of a fresh mushroom can form a new colony. . .

Think of the future now :-D

Took pictures of some I found today, so much competition yet they don't check inside the deeper parts of the bush where I'm checking.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Another ninja patch in plain site from the drivers seat. . .

Poor homeless dude approached me to see what I was doing and almost fell over with hysterics. . .

Sorry no environment shots. . .
Faaar too dodgey. . .

The manky ones still have psilocybin in them! Those ones in your pic are not too far gone, IMO... and I think you'll find they look a bit nicer once they dry (not as nice as freshies), and any little critters will run away once the flesh dries up...  I would snip the butts off asap after harvest & try to propagate them.

Any black ones you find might be too far gone:  some people say they will give you gut cramps- but I ate some (thoroughly dried) black shrooms to test it back in 2018, it was fine for me.  In my test examples I found that the outer most skin was black, but just underneath was normal: I found some pics of some of them:

Bobbit has good advice-  think of the future now!
I am also re-planting about 1 in every 10 fruits I find (I sacrifice the uglier ones) into hopeful new habitats on my way home from hunts.  It is a hard thing to do, sacrificing my hard earned shrooms... Lets hope it pleases the gods & pays off.
