Here's my tek for doing popcorn It's all I use and have a fairly low contam rate. Step one ... Rinse and sift threw the corn..i feel this to be a vary important step...get all the ugly ones out half ones.. wrinkly ones...off color ones...and you can never over rinse ...i sift threw them while I'm rinsing them.. Step two Boil on high for 45 mins to an hour...you will tell when it ready by the amount of starch in the water...once your water starts get thicker and bubbles become bigger from the starch...thats when you will know thay are ready...for me i find it's just at the 45 min mark...have done an hour with no issue ...but I find that 45 has less busted kernels...now drain the corn into a container if you like grain water agar..let the corn evaporate for 5 mins before putting it into your clean jars...leave around an inch at the top unfilled as to leave room to shake and inoculate with agar.. Step three If your lids have fae holes you will want to wrap the lid with tin foil as to stop steam from entering threw you micropore or poly fill..fill pc to you your preferred level of water ...i like the water to be up just below the jars when I use a rack that sits two inches of the bottom of PC...if your rack sits directly on the bottom of the PC I have the water come 1/4 way up the jar...now pc at 15 psi for 2 hours...remove jars and let cool...make sure to shake them the next day to redistribute some moisture that will be on the sides of the jar ...dont worry the corn will suck it up...and shake one more time if needed

Nice. What means of FAE do you utilize that doesn’t require covering jar lids? Welcome to the Shroomery. Sorry you caught Trich your first day.

Yes ...the plastic lids are an imperfect seal...and having it just barely tight gives enough gas exchange for proper mycelium growth

"If your lids have fae holes you will want to wrap the lid with tin foil as to stop steam from entering threw you micropore or poly fill"
You mean gas exchange. Spawn jars never get FAE

Isn't it the same thing... both utilize a hole or holes covered with micropore tape or polyfill. Except no mods of course. Kind of just semantics on wording.

Its like the difference between a drip of water and a stream of water. Both are representing water leaving a vessel but at a different rate. The rate is important. If your grain harvests lids have FAE instead of GE, the grain inside is likely to dry out.

I use this same basic tek just sliiiiiiiightly different...
I use feed corn. The big ass bags of 50lb they sell at the hardware store for $7 or less. Sure beats the lb bags of popcorn at Walmart that are $2 each! Gotta be feed corn, though I'm sure cracked corn could be used, I've been meaning to try it lately since I'm not shining anymore, I've got a big bag just sittin in the garage...Anyways.
Rinse thoroughly. 1 full quart jar of feed corn is ~1lb of corn, and is enough to fill 2 jars after processing. So when I'm prepping corn, if I'm making 14 jars (2 runs of my PC) I prep 7 quarts of corn. So rinse the hell out of it, get all the dust off, and if you fill a bowl with water and agitate, you'll get rid of the bits of cob that are in there (It's for animals, they don't care, but I do...mycelium doesn't care though it eats it if you miss it).
Pour into the PC after rinsing. Fill PC with water an inch or two above the corn. The more water the better, you can't have too much, but the more you have the longer it'll take to get to heat and to cool off. Cook at 15psi for 30 minutes. Let cool, let it depressurize by itself, about 30-45 minutes it takes to release the lock.
RINSE THOROUGHLY. Very thoroughly. The bottom of the PC will have some pretty slimy corn. Rinse it all real good. Don't worry about burst kernels, myc doesn't care.
When done rinsing (I use a strainer, bounce it around, pound it with cold water) pour the corn onto a bath towel. Spread it out, and use another towel to lightly pat it dry. You want it moist to the touch, but not wet. Damp really.
Jar up, 1-2 inch on top of free space, PC for 95 minutes (That extra 5 minutes sets my mind at ease, you do you boo-boo).
Works great. Corn is the best, lots of sugar in it, the myc is always pretty strong!
