Hoof fungus? Northern Michigan
    #26630721 - 04/26/20 08:32 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.

Dead tree, old growth forest. Unsure of the tree, perhaps an old summer beech?

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

Polypore

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.
No stem

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

Gray, white, brown rings - looks like an oyster shell on upper exterior

Spore print color:
Very important!

Polyspore side is brown/beige - will check to see if it left prints but was very hard like wood

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any. Same above.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

Okay thank you! What is the best way to tell the two apart? I was torn between ganoderma and fomes as well.

This one had a brown underside but other mushrooms on trees nearby that we're similar had a white polypore side.

It could be that the two species were living in tandem, but they are both incredible spore producers and the season, in my opinion, in Michigan, isn't warm enough for Fomes fomentarius to be there yet. If others around it were white undersides, I'd have to stick to my guns and say this in picture is Ganoderma applanatum. Just very dry.

I would say that this mushroom didn't grow this year. The two species are pretty similar, but you will get a feel for each one with experience. The best way to differentiate is KOH reaction. KOH reacts black with Ganoderma while it will react dark red with Fomes fomentarius. Ganoderma usually has a white pore surface and G. applanatum will bruise brown upon handling. Fomes fomentarius can have a white/cream pore surface too though. The shape can be different too, Fomes fomentarius is usually taller and more hoof shaped, with a larger point of attachment. Cutting it in half may reveal things as well. thicker, perennial  G. applanatum will have 1-2cm deep annual pore layers while Fomes fomentarius will typically have taller tubes. the inner material is different too in a difficult way to describe. Hope this helps.
