Slow drying and partial drying is the main thing that hurts potency

^ second that! Drying is super important if you plan on storing them. I go for 8 hours on all my loads to ensure proper dehydration and to kill off any unseen contaminants (if any). I dont think anyone had mentioned this yet but you can cut out the bottom of one your drying trays and use it as a spacer for bigger fruit. I had a problem crushing my giant guys so i modded out the try and now i can dry giant clusters intact. Got the idea from a user on here and i hope it helps

I think the climate makes a huge difference. I have a cheap ass nesco and it’ll do smaller and medium ones in 4-6 hours and fat ones in 8-10.
I even started weighing them then putting them back in for a few hours just to make sure.
However I have very low humidity. For example today it’s currently 13% so on top of the heat the dehydrator is blowing super dry air.
But definitely better safe than sorry. I did a lot of testing to make sure, not advising anybody to use these times as a default.

That's exactly how long it takes mine, unless it's one of those rounds with a bunch of fatties...
then my dehydrator looks like a blind man's jenga tower till the fruits shrink enough for the trays to come together xD

No bendy stems, no desiccant, no problems. And my dehydrator motor lasts for a year at least instead of 6 months. Plus the fan racks make for a great staging area while fresh picks wait for a spot in the dehydrators. Definitely helpful when you're rolling through lbs but don't wanna buy a $500 cabela
You must have the worst dehydrator ever lol.
Just the cheap $35 nesco dehydrator. But it's still cheaper to replace the $15 motor once a year for 10 years than it is to buy an expensive cabela. You put a ton of weight through one every year and they die lol

Maybe try doing that? I have 2 presto dehydrator for huge harvests and because they were pretty cheap.

Guys, what the hell? Slow drying? If I can achieve in 6 hours what it is taking you 24 to do, then I am much faster than you.
Maybe your dehydrators just are not very good. Mine was not $30, more around $200.
And you hint at short cuts, but.... I am weighing them. If they are reduced to 6% mass in 6 hours, and a further 18 hours doesn't reduce their mass then clearly there is no more dehydration to be done.

Had some spare materials, lots of time, and found an inspiring DIY dehydrator post on shroomery somewhere.

Basically a fan with an inbuilt heater = dehydrator.
bought a ceramic heater fan on amazon, pumps out some serious heat on high setting.
Waiting for my first grow to mature to harvest, and test out this puppy..
Tried drying Ginger and apple slices, cracker crispy dry in 4hrs on low heat+fan setting.
Makes sense to have it dry fast and since it's going to be running, might as well run it longer just to be sure..
Anyone notice issues with overdrying, or is that not possible?
Have space to expand to 8 trays comfortable or more if needed!

Never dry enough. Every time I buy anything with descant, I save it, I Dry them cracker dry. and then bury them in descant packets, in a bag.
I recharge the packets for each new bag. Stops them from absorbing moisture.
I tried fan drying. ? never again. We have neither the heat, nor the dry to do any sort of thing here.

This is only my first grow, but I am starting to dry everything as soon as I have harvested enough to make it worthwhile to break out the dehydrator. I basically only put aside whatever fresh I want to eat within 7 days of picking it, and dry the rest.
My dehydrator, a fairly cheap one, seems to have everything cracker-dry in like 6 hours, but after reading so many horror stories by people who only thought they dried them properly, I have followed the advice of all the people saying to leave the shrooms on the racks of the dehydrator for a full 24 hours. Since there seems to be no indication of potency loss in 24 hours with an electric fan and heating coil at about 173 degrees, I figure better safe than sorry.
I am storing them in large mason jars with a desiccant, and hopefully they will last upwards of a year or more.

This is interesting just built one around the same concept but having difficulty getting to 160 it gets to 125 and forced air heater off amazon kicks off. Looking at adding some type of heating element but up for suggestions. I have an exhaust fan connected to bottom 150cfm and couple computer fans along the back. I could only justify it by putting 22 racks in there so if I can get it up to temp than I can do a much larger quantity than the cheaper ones. Let me know if you guys got suggestions for heating for a engineer from tempco that’s hopefully going supply me with suggestion also.

You could just buy 4 or 5 cheap dehydrators with extra trays and run them at the same time. I like your dehydrator though ...

True but to get to the same capacity you’d have spend about 1500 I spent around 600-700 for that one. Thank you I hope I get the heating issue figured out was my main concern it the beginning.

If it’s kicking off at 125 you could try cooling the heating element or bypassing the sensor.
Prob not the safest. That or add a second one half way up maybe.

That is one helluva build you got going there!
Looks like you are doing some serious growing!
I haven't tested mine to make sure they are getting to 160-170F internally, but from what I understand, it's the movement of air flow that basically lifts the moisture out of what you are drying. Higher temps definitely speed up the process, as with Lower RH %.
I run my fan from Amazon at high temps, full blast, and it never shuts down from overheating. I have 5 air flow vents up top, and it helps the hot air flow upwards and out of the dry box. Air exiting the vents are hot enough IMO.
I will try with drying the fruits when I get my harvest, and let you know how it works. But from what I've heard from the post which gave me the idea to build this box for $50, the OP states, cracker dry in 12hours. I'll try running mine for 12hrs, and then another 12hrs, to see if there is any difference.
I would recommend trying to vent the build you have from the top, instead of the side fans?

Interesting, I got that temp controller on outside so when it does eventfully get to 161 it will kick off the heating source turn on the cooling fan and push the wet air out of the vent on top of the box. Wow 5 vents though I went with the one the size of my cooling fan. I did attempt to cool the heater but kept kicking off, going try a 1500watt heating element. My partner like put a gas pilot flame down there, I said you must me out of your mind open flame in a completely wooden box, I’ll go sleep and end up with my whole place on fire but he’s set on it. Main reason I need get something that works so this mfer don’t put a pilot flame in there If you don’t mind me asking what heater you using there?
