Can oysters grow solely on fuel pellets + supplemential pellet?
    #26630122 - 04/26/20 03:15 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Saw someone using a bagger with two openings up top to feed in what im
Guessing is a hardwood pellet and the other looks pellet but not sure what it is to make sub bags... is it possible to not break the pellets down to sawdust and leave them whole? Would the bags still require sterilization afterwards if they aren’t being supplemented?

Not sure what you meant in the first part, about two openings and whatnot, but the way I used to make all my substrates was to

-put the measured amount of dry fuel pellets in the filter patch bag, with gypsum if desired
-pour in the measured amount of boiling water

So yes, it is possible to leave them whole.  When the water soaks in, they come apart.

No they don't require sterilization if you are not supplementing them

I am sure the setup is one side is HWFP's and the other is soy hull pellets. Once the proper amount of water is added the fuel pellets will fall apart. The soy hulls do not fall apart as easily until they are sterilized the heating process will cause everything to mix together well when you mix your spawn in. I am in the process of designing a system similar to the one you are talking about that will add everything dry to the bag and then add water. The cost is a few hundred dollars to build it. I will probably make a kit to build the bagger and sell it on eBay.

I went and looked back at the system and it indeed adds a preset amount of water in the bag

I meant that it had two sides to it. Do you know your ratio for your 5Lb bags  fuel pellet to water?
Were you growing both oyster and shiitake in this manner?

I know you didn't ask me but no one will be able to tell you how much water to add. But you need about 60% water content. The best way to get your water right is to use a flow meter like this one...

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-2-Water-Diesel-Fuel-Oil-Flow-Meter-LCD-Display-Flow-Sensor-Solenoid-US/362907177094?hash=item547ef41086:g:rx8AAOSwnYVePRvr

Or you can weigh it out.

Like I said you have to PC after adding the water or the soy will not break up and your end product will be to dry even though you think you have 60%. Water content.

Weigh out 4 liters of water ( 8.8 lbs ) add water until you have 60% then weigh the water that is leftover subtract the weight from the 8.8 lbs. The number you come up with is the weight of water you added. Convert this to liters if you are using a flow meter.

Use this to figure out what % of water is in your bag...

It is a trial and error thing until you figure it out but a good place to start is put water in your bag until you squeeze a handful of sub really hard and water just pools around your fingers but does not drip.

I forgot to mention no need for the desiccator in the video we do not need to be that accurate.

Glad to help. I know the flow meter seems like overkill but it is worth the money. It saves a lot of time.

One other thing I should mention is make sure you follow the microwave video pretty closely. You can blow up your microwave if you run it too long with no moisture in it. I put a coffee cup of water in with my sub to be safe. Don't pour the coffee cup of water in the sub!! Just have it in the microwave when you are drying the sub so you have no chance of blowing it up. I don't want your wife wanting to kill me.

I forgot to mention that you have to keep drying the sub you will think it is dry but it is not. Keep drying it until you see the weight stop going down. Just like the vid says.

It was something like 5.5cups water to 6 cups pellets if I remember correctly, which I don't, but it varies a lot depending on the brand/style of pellets you can get so it would have to be adjusted.

And yes, I did almost everything in my pic gallery this way.  Shiitake, Oyster, beech, lions mane, pioppino, enoki, etc.
