I have another day or two until the last jar colonizes completely so I am trying to figure out which tek that I want to follow. I have never spawned to bulk before. What do y'all recommend? Coir is not readily available where I live.I was thinking about making a substrate based on Black Kow composted manure. Any ideas on this?

Get coir. Amazon or any pet store.........it’s readily available everywhere and very hard to screw up. Manure is not an easy first grow.

I'd just order a load of coir for this and future grows. Pm me if you need a source.
How I do substrate if one tub at a time it's 1 brick, 2qts verm, then add 4qts hot h20. Cap, mix well before spawning. Save 1qt of sub as a casing and fruiting conditions at spawn. Mp tape 2 layers on bottom, 1 layer on top. Monotubs.

I live in rural Alaska and can get two kinds of coir in town. Go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and head over to where the plants are. Get you a 11lb block of Viagrow for like 10-12 bucks. Black Kow sucks, but it will work. Would rather use it oudoors if I had to. Remember using it in a kiddie pool grow years ago when I got some for free and it worked okay with some ammendments. Agree with above: not great for a first grow. Always be on the lookout for area pastures too. Lots of hpoo out there... but I bet you have a home improvement store nearby that has your back.

You can use jiffy mix if treated properly. Was a big thing before the coir as a sub burst on the scene. I have seen other people use it with success. I would sterlize it in quarts first though.

We do indeed have both, but Coconut Coir is not available for pick up, and not available for delivery to store. I haven't checked the pet stores yet. How much do I need for these partial jars? What size tub do I need? Thanks for the help

You only use 1/3 brick for three quarts?
I normally use a whole one for 4 quarts. The eco earth pet store three pack bricks.

I couldn't find a 22 qt tub so I bought a 25 qt. I used 1/3 of a brick of coir. It was really a pain in the ass to cut it. I think next time, that I will use a saw. I added 1 1/2 qts water and got to field capacity with the vermiculite then pasteurized for 90 minutes. The temperature went too high at one point up to 195F so I turned it off. I lined the bottom of the tub with a black garbage bag I let the substrate cool to room temperature and layered the substrate and the spawn into the tub and mixed it. I put a layer of aluminum foil on top of the substrate, misted the tub and put on the lid. It resides now in my closet until it colonizes and can join my grow bag project by the window. If this is successful, I will post some pictures.

No leed for the foil (just to save you the trouble) by the by. 25qts are a nice size. I have a couple of the latching Sterilite 25qts. Best of luck. Look forward to seeing your work!

Oh yeah I skimmed over the closet thing somehow... It can go with your bag now. Light is beneficial in all stages of growth.

For breaking up coir if you can get a solid blade knife or something similar you can just jam it into the brick then pull or push the handle and it splits really easily.

Both errors corrected. Thanks for the tips. It just seemed so naked! After it consolidates a little more I will trim the liner. Wish me luck.

Thanks, the are getting bigger! I don't know why they are clustered in the center of the tub, and not so much on the ends. I have been watching your experiment thread. I was going to ask you how you collected all of those oak flowers then my oak trees bloomed, and answered that question for you.
