D3 hooked me up with that one. Someone's custom build. I like it.

Yeah it looks nice.

D3, does the person still build these? I would really like to buy one

This is a proof of concept agar punch.

She's not pretty but the concept will work - this is not the final version.

I've never done any kind wood work or crafts before. It took me a while to figure out how to do this.

The length will need to change but I'm super happy with how the trial version came out.

  • $6.14 for 0.9 metre of 7mm x 0.2mm copper tubing
  • $2.78 for 7mm drill bit
  • $0 for drill (already had one)
  • $0 for file (already had one)
  • $0 for knife (already had one)
  • $0 for screwdriver handle (already have many screw drivers)

There is enough copper tubing left to make at least 5 more of these, probably more.

-

$6.14 + $2.28 = $8.42

$8.42 / 6 = ~$1.40

Approx $1.40 per punch.

Punches with resin handles seem to be $50 ish.

-

It's obviously basic and most people would be able to make this with no issue but I'm still super proud that this worked.

Turned out real nice, brass is a good option too, I’d shorten it up a bit maybe trim it to about 1/2” from your hole or so.

How did you secure it to your handle?

Thanks for the tips!

I'll look into both brass and stainless steel.

The handle came from an old screw driver, I left the screw driver in boiling water for around 2 minutes and then removed it from the water and the handle slid off with ease.

I drilled a 7mm diameter hole into the hole that was already in the handle, then I pushed (by hand) the copper tube into the hole with as much pressure as I could.

It's wedged in there. I tried to take the copper tube out but couldn't get it out by hand.

Inspired by your agar-punch D3, I've been goofing around a bit and settled on a pretty decent right-angled style..

3/8" stainless bent in a shephard's hook-ish, sat in a pretty apt, hollowed-out shroom shaped wood handle. Still needs a little sanding and lacquer to finish 'er off, but i'm digging it. Little longer than I was shooting for (10-ish" in all), but should be able to keep hands far from the petri's when punchin'.

Thank you for this writeup.  I performed my first transfers today, neat little circles of myc which I punched out with a tube of metal which used to be the outside of a tire guage.

D3's post is what got me out of the no-pours & into "traditional style" agar. Literally bought everything needed off this post. Poured my first 500 plates now, was rough initially, but gradually got better.

been playing w/ millet flour. Myc seems to like it.

Will always be very appreciative of this post.

love this mycology art.

from my understanding, the main difference between this and Bod's agar tek is that you let the plates sit for a day in the SAB to reduce condensation.  is that the key to getting them so clear?

Just out of curiosity what kind of setup are you using in your SAB? I want one of those racks. I'm using a 106qt Sterilite right now but the shape of the lid presents problems with the tilt especially when pouring if i'm not careful. Thanks again for all the helpful info. This is gold.

Take the lid off, put the tub upside down on the table and "voilà"

Awesome TEK. Simple and creative.

Generally I’m struggling with condensation with my Agar. I pour at 120 degrees using an infrared laser thermometer from harbor freight. My house is at 68 degrees during the day and about 64 at night now that it’s winter. I’m using an SAB and stacking the dishes in sets of 10 leaving them in there for 3+ days at a time. I’m at altitude but in a really dry climate so not sure if that has anything to do with it. This is 3 days in and I generally can’t get past this amount of condensation.
