Used to use popcorn, as that's what I started out with bc of ease of obtaining and it was possible to prep without pc. Just recently decided to try "real" grains and bought 25kg of horse feed oats. Working really well so far! Just need a bit of steel netting to modify my colander as the holes are big enough for some oats to fall through. Next time I want to try something new I'm going to go for wbs.

I’m surprised oats is getting as much love as it is. I thought people had issues using oats just from reading the forum. I’ve been using rue berries but my local feed store only had wheat so I grabbed a 50lb bag of that to try. Lots of loose hulls in the bag but nothing a garden hose and a bunch of rinsing won’t take care of.

Just grabbed some oats as it was the easiest cheap bulk buy I could find. A friend told me he had a lot of contam with it, but I haven't had a lot of problems. I've had 2 grain bags contam, but that was most likely my sterile tek that was sloppy. Found penicilum (I think) in the transfer I did from the same agar plate i inoced those bags with. Oh yea I remember now that was the time I dropped my entire agar wedge to the floor of my SAB. So far oats are working well for me!

I've had a 25kg bag of horse feed oats sitting in my house for almost two years now. I'm now finally getting around to agar work to use the stuff lol. It was definitely the cheapest around for me when I was looking especially in terms of amount.

And it has been a week with no more comments so I guess Oats Win.

They are inexpensive, have a good shake ability, and a decent amount of Inoculation points. And I'm just bumping my own thread to get more data.

I still stand firm to say rye grain is an almost perfect spawn grain. wheat is also up there but wbs is second on my list.

I like both Rye and Oats but Rye is more expensive for me to buy based on where I live.

Wow what a great help Sockadin!
I voted for Oats because it'll be a decade before I finish the bag!
But I got the impression Wheat was more popular...

1. Rye
2. Wheat
3. WBF

And hands down without a doubt... fuck oats. They'll work if you have no other options but oats are far from ideal. The hulls on them make them light and "airy". I dont like the way that cultures grow on it. Always seems weaker than when the same culture is on denser grains, like rye.

A bushel of rye weighs 56 lb. A bushel and a half of oats weighs like 48 lb. I've noticed that difference in density makes a big difference in perfomance.

Honestly I’ve been pretty impressed with popcorn, it colonized fast, easy to shake and seems to provide nutrients for flush after flush. Only problem is price. I’m almost done with my first 50lb bag of wheat. It’s worked good enough that I’ll be buying another bag.

Gone through more than 10 batches of Producers pride oats all of which contaminated before full colonization (unless li was used). Picked up a bag of rye from a local feed store and compared to the oats it’s so clean like holy shit. Took a couple tries to get optimal hydration down but I finally have clean looking growth from wedges as well as lc. The price sucks though.

Same here. And if you sprout them they're a nice addition to a lentil curry dish. Gives it a bit if bite.

The last time I used rye (organic) the whole 25K bag became infested with weevils, to the point that I could feel the heat given off by them.

That's funny D3m you went from popcorn one of the largest to millet one of the smallest.

I am working millet and it's pretty good. It's hard to beat oats because they prep so easy.
If I didn't have to boil feed corn for 45 minutes it would be my favorite.
