P. Cinctulus or P. foenesecii?
    #26627624 - 04/25/20 04:32 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi!  I found these in my lawn this morning.  Does anyone know if they are P. Cinctulus or P. foenesecii?  I’ve attached pics and spore prints!  Thanks!

Black sporeprint. Foenesecii has brown.

Wow, sweet thanks! I read that the spore print can be similar and that I should do one on black paper (if the paper stays black = cinctulus and brown = foenesecii) - do you think it’s necessary to do that to confirm?

No, white paper or tin foil is good 👍 Hold it in bright light to make sure it isn't dark brown. This could very well be panaeolus olivaceus as well, which isn't always active.

P. cinctulus is not nearly as brittle as this mushrooms, you can see the stipes have snapped during handling. That spore print is purple-brown, not black

Cool! The last pic in my post was taken in natural light - It’s actually kind of hard to tell - I guess I would say maybe a lighter black?

They look black on my phone. But if you see brown, it's brown.

It is difficult to tell the difference in foe and banded mottle gill prints unless you have them side by side, These are foes

Bummer! I did another spore print on foil to see if it was easier to tell -  thought I’d post for the final verdict!

For the future, leave the cap over night, then you'll get a much better print 👍
