What's in your garden this year? 2
#26626853 - 04/25/20 11:00 AM (3 years, 8 months ago) |

Started peppers a little late in March so not sure how they'll do this year. Orange bell and Thai chili

Outdoors I started:
Radishes Swiss Chard Bok Choy Kale Carrots Onions Peas Poppies Wild Flowers
I have cilantro and a few different basils (lots of Tulsi) to plant when it gets warmer. Will buy some tomato and cuke plants if garden centers reopen in time.
My cannabis seeds got seized at the border so no luck there this year
Chives & scallions, oregano, parsley, thyme, lemon balm, mint, and more are coming back strong from last year. The chives spread like crazy, they're everywhere.
Radishes are already doing well
What's everyone else planting this year?

I think last year we planted them in early April and they were peaking mid June. We have perennial ones too that come up so I'm never sure which is which

Never tried sniffing, no. I have eaten the seeds a couple times. It is a plant I highly respect and one everyone should be very cautious with.

Right on!
I was meaning to make a garden thread for the new year, suppose this will be the gardeners of the pub chit chat thread lol.
What I've got going so far...
Flowers...
Sunflowers Poppies Indian Blanket Bachelor buttons
Melons...
Cantaloupe (I saved seeds of a melon from a fruit stand last summer, the thing straight up smelled exactly like bubble gum and very rich/complex sweet flavor).
Charentais (An old french heirloom, similar to a "classic" cantaloupe but better lol, very pungent/aromatic and with brown sugar/molasses like sweetness)
Ha’Ogen (A cultivar from Israel...Green flesh, kinda similar to honey dew but with a much more rich & complex flavor/aroma)
Lemon Drop (A hyrbid/cross of sorts, has Galia melon and Ha’Ogen in it's genetics, flesh is green and is a bit firm & crisp, slightly tart & sour)
Watermelons....
Ali Baba (A cultivar from the middle east IIRC...Red flesh, sweet & yummy)
Orangeglo (An orange flesh variety, slightly softer texture than most watermelons, flavor is slightly different with some mild fruity notes and a bit of carrot)
Peppers....I'm getting a late start with germinating but I should still end up with some fruits by fall. I'll be using seeds from my peppers last year, they were all grown near each other and open pollinated so I'll likely end up with a random mix of things. I'm actually kinda looking forward to what they grow into since they're all open pollinated, I got seeds from...
-Sugar Rush Peach pepper -Lemon Drop pepper -Red Bell pepper -Some type of Hungarian pepper -Some type of Thai pepper
Cannabis....
Lemon Wookie Glue (from seed)
Random seeds I've found in my buds the past couple years (Thin Mint, Tangieland, Slymer)
And clones of....
-Permafrost (Trainwreck X White Widow)
-Wedding Cake
I'll be getting a few more clones within the next week.
Some other things I want to grow this time around....Carrots, potatoes, beans, pumpkin.
-OM

Trying to grow Pawpaw from seeds this year.
I started a lot of plants from seed last year that I kept inside over winter and now moving them out due to being a good size to survive next winter; blue java bananas, dead man's fingers, and four different types of passionfruit.
I also planted a lot of hazel and willow tree cuttings hoping they'll take root, and then I will try grow truffles on the roots from some agar cultures I have.

Nice man, that's a solid assortment
I've never thought to grow melon for some reason. I think I'll add that to my list for next year... already used up all my plantable space in the yard. Thinking of tearing up the front yard next year and making it all garden.
Yea I'm hoping to at least get some peppers by the fall. For the Thai chilis I freeze them and can use them all winter.
Do you grow the cannabis outdoors?

They vary widely in that regard. I'd say a couple months- 5months+ depending on light, temps, soil and water. Seen them haul ass and throw big pods mid summer and the same strain be late in the fall. Not really sure what makes them tick. I wait two weeks after petals drop before taking pod for max alkaloids though.

Nice.
I've been wanting to grow those blue java bananas for a while, I'm not sure how well they'd do in my climate though.
And I've been wanting to try a pawpaw for a while now too. I love those "custard" like fruits, like cherimoya and jack fruit etc etc...

Yea I've got a decent assortment of things going, I really want to get some carrots growing and some beans and potatoes too. And an herb/aromatic garden, lots of aromatic herbs & plants I'd like to grow.
I can't wait for those melons to be be ripe (they're just now germinating)...I'll sow some more melon seed in a couple months for another round/harvest during late summer.
Ya gotta grow some melons next time! lol...Nothing like a properly ripe melon from one's own yard. No melon from the store comes anywhere close to the sweetness & richness of flavor from home grown lol. Lots of neat cultivars/varieties to choose from too.
And yea, I'm growing cannabis outdoors. I'm in a legal state, I'm allowed to grow 6 plants though the county I'm in has technically "banned" outdoor grows . Fuck that tho, I should be able to grow the plant wherever I want on my property and as many of them as I want (the way it's been "legalized" is super lame). I don't have any space inside the house to grow and don't have anywhere near enough $$$$ to set up an indoor grow or the $$$ for the increase in an electric bill from running lights & A/C & fans etc etc, and I much prefer sun grown herb anyways. Lots of folks in my neighborhood grow outdoors tho, it's obvious because one can't go more than a block or so with out smelling fresh skunky dank in the air from early spring until late fall lol. This year I will prob be growing more than 6 plants tho . I don't know how such a thing is enforced . There are some folks in my neighborhood that have gotta be growing a lot and/or very large trees considering how pungent the smell is, so I'm hoping my small personal grow doesn't attract much attention from the ghetto bird that flies around the area every day.
That's a bummer your seeds got seized!....I'm pretty certain there are a handful of cannabis seed vendors that are domestic, so no chance of seeds getting seized. It's still early in the season, if ya want I can find/suggest some domestic seed vendors if you want and let ya know in a message.

Sage, mint, rosemary, thyme, lavender, parsley, oregano, basil, marjoram, about 4 different kinds of peppers(bells, poblanos, cayenne, something else), tomatoes, arugula, spinach, zucchini, squash, couple different kinds of brocolli, cucumber, red and white onions.
I've got a whole bunch more seeds, but I'm just gonna drop them at my brothers when I travel downstate to go pick up my mail that I totally forgot to forward until just now. It's a bit late in the season to get them started, but it's a fun little project for my nephews.
....I was thinking about getting a potato plant, because shortages, and I love taters.
But.. so much effort, and I already have to put an addition onto the garden...and there is a potato farmer right down the road from here, so I guess I could try and go direct to the source if we start seeing shortages.

I tried a mob of edibles this year, all sorts herbs and veg, but got decimated by grasshoppers.
I have many trees, cactus and entheogenic plants. They don't seem to eat them. Recent great additions were mango, avo and curry trees. My citrus got hit hard, lost four 3 year old trees on a bad season change, which of course my acacias loved and all jumped 2 or 3 meters over the season.
The mantis have taken up residence in the nursery area now which is great. They're smashing down the grasshoppers. Need my old doggo to go to doggo heaven before I can get some chooks in. They'll soon take care of the bastards.
These guys rock.

Planting a new 4 in 1 Apple tree. Just bought a house and it came landscaped really nice but there's a couple Open areas I need to fill out. The Tree produces 4 types of Apples, hence the 4 in 1. I know it makes Granny Smith and Fuji's.
Not sure what else I'm going to add. Probably a Peach tree to fill out the last Open area. Then I have room for some potted plants that will be all my Cacti. Finally have the Space and Privacy for a mean Cactus Collection. Excited!
My backyard is PERFECT for growing, it literally gets direct sun all day from 930AM to 6PM. The Cactus should blow up during the Spring, Summer, and Fall. I'll have to store them in the garage during the Cold Winter Months but that's fine.

My backyard is as well....
That is actually the ONLY thing I truly like about where I live at the moment, is the fact that the backyard receives nothing but pure sunshine basically the entire day from shortly after sunrise until shortly before sunset, that as well as the lovely rich fertile soil we have (in a valley close to a river, sandy/loamy soil, perfect soil).
The abundant sunshine and the perfect soil are the only aspects I like about living where I do at the moment, other than that I absolutely despise living where I do and can not wait to move....but I kinda dread trying to find another place where I have space for a large garden and can grow cannabis that also receives a lot of sunshine and has good soil. Good soil and sunshine and being able to grow a garden & cannabis is towards the top of my requirements/priorities lol, like I'm willing to live in a shack as long as I have some earth & sunshine to work with. All I want to do is grow plants & trees & food & medicine & things, it's a big hobby & part of my life.
Growing plants & things gives me something to constantly look forward to.
Since I'm trying to move and get my life started elsewhere after this summer/fall, this might be the last year I have a garden and get to grow some of my own herb for a few years .
Congrats on the new house

Hmm I might see about getting some melon seeds and converting my radish patches once I pick them in a couple weeks. Cannabis will have to wait, got two nasty 'love letters' from the feds and money's low. I ordered some from Oregon last year no problem, didn't realize this batch was from Canada until it was on the way. Purple haze and blueberry
Outdoor cannabis seems like the way to go. I had no experience growing and literally just dropped the seeds in soil last year, used some powdered fertilizer twice. Still had a decent harvest and the bud was nice. This year I was going to try to get a little more informed on it all

Quite a list, sounds awesome . Do you start the peppers indoors?
I definitely want to get some broccoli and potatoes going if I ever can expand my garden space. My yard has way too much lawn

I was actually just talking to someone in PM about wanting avocado and citrus trees, sorry to hear that you lost some. Must be cool having acacias on the property, and convenient for certain things
Had to look up what a chook was, ha. That's in my future plans as well. We have a ton of wild ducks that do well at insect control. Spraying on cayenne supposedly helps too.

Quite a list, sounds awesome . Do you start the peppers indoors?
I definitely want to get some broccoli and potatoes going if I ever can expand my garden space. My yard has way too much lawn
Yup! I started everything inside, they're still inside, and I'm about to transplant some of the zucchini and broccoli to larger containers because it's going nuts. Every time I start thinking it's time to put everything in the ground, there's a random freak snow storm or frost .
And hey a lawn is a beautiful canvas for an even more beautiful garden .

My radishes were about a week or two from being ready, went out this morning and the woodchucks ate all of them . They totally decimated the greens on my onion sets too. Then I put down powdered fertilizer on my kale, chard, bok choy and carrots this morning and wind storms blew it all away.
Off to a great start lol. I had like 70 radishes and 50 onions thinking animals could never get to all of them, and then they ambushed all of it in 48 hours. Lesson learned, going to expand my caged-in garden by a lot next year. Going to be some fat critters in my yard this year

Oh no!
Do you spray any smelly stuff around your garden? We have a herd of deer that spend a lot of time in our meadow, and there's a harmless, but apparently super smelly spray that has kept the garden mostly protected. From bunnies and rodents as well. Unfortunately not from tomato worms though. I think praying mantises and maybe ladybugs might do the trick there.
Having a dog that likes to chase critters away from the garden helps as well

Hmm, I do have some coyote urine we use to keep things out of our trash. I just plant things over such a large area that it'd probably be tough to keep up with, might give it a shot on the stuff that's remaining though.
Now that I think of it it's possible we've had some deer come through too, I saw a couple huge prints in the area and had no idea what they were from. We never have them but last week my wife saw 2 a couple streets over, and we probably have the most vegetation in the area for them.
It seems like the shutdown is allowing the bigger animals to roam more freely. We used to have a couple coyotes living in our swamp, but haven't seen any evidence of them this year. That could be partly why the garden is getting hit so far. Last year we went the full growing season without anything really getting eaten, this year it's turned into a buffet

Reading about the seed seizures makes me feel blessed to have access to a variety of seeds.
The seedlings im proudest of are Trichocereus Pachanoi, Bridgessii, and Peruvianus a bit under a year old. I failed many cacti seeds over many years to give you an idea my excitement.
Got lots of sweet peppers and a bhut jolokia started around January. Got one argyreia nervosa thats about a year old but was stunted in the fall from leaving it in the frost, lost all of its leaves buts it looks good now. Got a couple cannabis to start from years old seeds, very excited to see them grow. A couple tomato plants, i love snacking tomatos fresh off the plant in the sun. A pot of Tabacco Rustica thats been constantly flowering and being weedy in lots of my indoor pots, i have little intention to smoke it but feel spiritual fulfillment from being a descendant of ~80 years of smokers. Revived a stunted Tradescantia Zebrina thats been in a Mexican soda bottle for too long, trying to do the same with a couple stunted goldfish plant cuttings. And hella lots of aloe to keep moisturized!

Might be describing fox urine. It's supposedly a natural product. Not sure how it is procured. I'm sure young virgins hold their privates. It's fairly effective but does require repeated applications after rain. It truly smells like the fires of hell.
As far as the other poster talking about soil. good, natural soil is hard to beat but even shit soil can be properly amended in a season or three.
Cheers
