Dry mushrooms with fan-assisted oven?
    #26626059 - 04/25/20 01:37 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi guys,
I have yet to birth my jars but I want to figure out if you think a fan-assisted oven (oven with a built in fan) could function for drying mushrooms?

I should add that the fan in the oven can be turned on without turning on the heating in the oven. Meaning the heat setting can be as low as 0.

Looks something like this:

I find oven drying to be the worst method for drying. But youre free to experiment if you want

I recommend lamp-drying or a dehydrator instead.

It's definitely better than any of those low temp drying methods. If you aren't willing to invest into a dehydrator yet, just go for it.

Even if you can run the fan with no heat the fans turn off when the door is open. Youd have to make something to hold down the closed door sensor. You want the door cracked open. And you do want to use heat

Actually the fan still runs with door open. How little heat should I have? It runs from 0 to 250 °C, the lowest markings are 0 and 50 °C, but I'm sure I can set it for temperature between 0 and 50 even though those are not marked.

It's not a very stable temperature IME. But, it works.

stupid question but, say you wanted to like redry a large sum of already dryed mushies you have in storage, would and over be a good idea? i mean theyre still cracker dry, but ive seen posts that show ziplocks allow moisture to get in either way. Most the storage is in a drawer with desicant packs as well.

If they become "stale" aka soft, you can try to "re-dry" them. Ive done it thou.

Some ovens have a dehydrate mode.  I had one of these for 10 years before I realized what the "deh" mode meant on it:  https://www.vikingrange.com/consumer/product/products/cooking/freestanding-ranges/5-series-ranges/dual-fuel-ranges---vdr/60--dual-fuel-range---vdr560

Quote:

High performance cooking modes include Bake, Convection Bake, TruConvec™ Convection Cooking, Convection Roast, Hi, Medium, and Low Broil, Convection Broil, Convection Dehydrate, Convection Defrost, and Self-Clean

That being said, running it to actually dehydrate is a complete waste of energy.  You are better off getting a real dehydrator (better results with less cost).
