How I pasteurize a ton of sub
    #26625075 - 04/24/20 03:45 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I know I know... you can do bucket tek and do fine.  And you don’t exactly need to pasteurize coir.  I’ve had success with no heat treatment and full blown sterilization of CVG.  That said I prefer this method as it has NEVER failed me.

I use freezer bags.  I place 1000g of CVG in gallon ziploc freezer bags then flatten the bag and contents into a pancake.  Leaving one corner un-ziplocked Allows the air to escape as I compress the bag with a large cutting board using all my weight to provide the compression force.

Keeping the mass of each bag ensures they all heat up at the same rate.  You must squeeze as much air out of each bag as you possibly can to prevent them from floating when placed into the water bath.

Then I stack these bags in my PC with jar lids in between to separate thus surrounding each bag with water.  Fill the whole thing with water and monitor temps while on the stove.  140-160 for 90 minutes.

Then when they’re cooled I allow a little air back into the bag, seal it back up,  and shake each bag to fluff it up for use.

This has worked with amendments too (horse poo, coffee...) which tells me everything is “properly” pasteurized.

If you’re looking for a way to pasteurize tons of coir, this method works.

I tried pasteurization in jars but that sucks because you have to dig the CVG out.

Seems legit. I’ve never actually pasteurized on the stove like that. I may give it a try to see if the max yield works out better.

I’ve always done the double bucket proper pasteurization. The muda bucket. I’ve done straight hpoo and verm using that method but I can only get about a mono’s worth of sub done in each set of buckets at a time.  I tried to double the recipe twice and both times my tubs triched out. I don’t really understand why since everything seemed to stay in temp range but as soon as I went back down things went back to normal.

I just throw 5-7 bricks + whatever additives i wanna use into a big ass cooler then dump in however many gallons of water i need. I mix when cool then I scoop out what i need into each mono then add spawn, mix it up then level over with a thin top layer. Literally takes hardly any time at all to bang out 5 monos.

Maybe an accumlative hour from water to spawn not counting cooler time.

I have done similar no heat added method also but would accompany a 70% success rate with no heat treatment.  Maybe it was the coir.

Advantage here is the ability to enrich the recipe with hpoo or coffee.  But those additives are not necessary IMO.

Two flushes then out to the woods for a “natural” flush.

I can typically pasteurize 6 monos worth of sub like this.

For cubes and coir that’s fine but sometimes you need the real deal pasteurization
