Casing not pinning.
    #2662484 - 05/11/04 09:36 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I birther my first casing that was made from crumbled PF cakes on Friday last week and still nothing. I birthed when the casing layer was about 50% covered with myc. The myc is now about 80-90 on the casing layer. I am concerned that overlay might occur. Is all this normal Should I have seen hyphal knots atleast by this time? The humidity is at 88%, and the temp is at 73.8.

Thanks people!!

btw, I had a look in older posts and the faq but could not find a answer that satified my question.

I wouldn't worry about overlay. Might want to drop the humidity a tad, just make sure it doesn't get TOO dry. Also, how many times have you been fanning your casing?

EDIT: [I was mistaken on the humidity]

Just give it more time, try to be patient and dont lower the humidity at all,try and raise it a little. To trigger pinning, casings need three things:
the introduction of fresh air exchanges (and thus, reduction of CO2buildup,Fanning), the introduction of light, and the reduction in temperature.
Ideally, the casing should be kept at 90-95% RH(Cakes 95-100%), and temps maintained at around 70-75?F.The casing should remain moist but not wet.
I wouldnt be too concerned with overlay as of yet.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.
