Hi guys,
I inoculated 5 one pound rye berry grain bags a month and 3 days ago. I mixed the bags almost 2 weeks ago. I noticed the other day that I had a few little blue spots about the size of a ballpoint pen scattered randomly throughout the bags. I initially thought it was mold and then upon further research, I believe it was just bruising. I was handing the bags at least twice a day to look for growth and contamination, had just mixed the bag, and I was having too big of swings in temperature which was causing condensation to form and then go away. I've also read that dry grain can lead to bruising, which someone told me that my grain looks dry. I left my bags alone and haven't moved them and got the temperature more stable with less visible condensation. Since making those adjustments, the little blue spots have gone away.
Anyways, I was checking my bags this morning and noticed one bag has little white blobs that almost look like pins to me. Are these pins, knots, primordia, etc. or infection? I still cannot figure out how to get a higher quality image uploaded to this site, but I can send a higher quality image if someone needs it.

If these are pins, knots, primordia, etc. can this bag still be spawned to a monotub or will the pins cause decay and problems to a colonizing substrate? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

It has got a bit of a yeasty look to it but I think this is just starting to pin. How long has it been fully colonised?

That is a little better. There is some white pre-pin looking dots near the bottom left. It could be pinning. Hard to say. Id say wait a week and see what happens.

I sure hope it's just pinning. There are only a few spots on top of the grain that isn't fully colonized, its probably like 98% colonized. It's probably been that way for a week, I was going to spawn them to a monotub in a few days.
If it is pinning or yeast, can this bag still be spawned to a monotub with other colonized grain? Thank you very much for your reply.

Ok very good, I appreciate it. This bag has been like 98% colonized for a week or more, only a few grains/places on top of the grain aren't fully colonized. If it is pinning, will allowing the bag to continue to colonize for another week cause any adverse affects if more pins form and mature? My goal is to spawn this to a monotub within the next few days. If those are pins, can I still spawn it to a monotub or will the pins mess with the colonizing substrate? Is there anything I should be looking for to differentiate it between yeast or pins? I don't smell any weird smells through the filter patch thankfully. Thanks again for your help and information.

Spawning with yeast contamination can be done but I think they are pins anyway. Maybe your grains are a bit dry at the top is why it’s been like that for a week, it should of colonised that by now. Maybe post some pics of the uncolonised bit.

Alright so I definitely think that those are pins, because it's really starting to consolidate and the mycelium is looking thicker. I won't be able to spawn these to a monotub until monday. Is it ok to spawn colonized grain to a substrate in a monotub after the grain has been showing pins? Here are some pics I took this morning.

I appreciate the help, I really really hope it's ok to spawn. I have made many stupid newbie mistakes and I'm definitely learning from them.

Thank you for responding. Can I spawn the grain to a monotub even though it's pinning already? I unfortunately cannot spawn the monotub till Monday. Any help or information is greatly appreciated.

Definitely spawn this bag... its started to get thicker mycelium.
looks like pins are forming.
It should be fine once you spawn them to substrate.
