Oysters curling in instead of out
    #26624218 - 04/24/20 09:11 AM (3 years, 11 months ago)

I'm making some progress with my edible grows, but still cannot
manage to get reasonable looking oysters. After starting out looking
normally in the first days, they start curling inwards and form these tube like shape:
1st flush:

I thought this might be related to a lack of FAE and ramped it up quite a bit,
but the 2nd flush is doing the same thing again:

This is quite puzzling to me, since they have gills all the way, so
I don't see any long stems indicating a lack of fresh air and the Lion's mane bags just right next to it seem really happy

What could be the reason for this strange shape? I cloned them from a supermarket
oyster mushroom, could it be genetics? Should I invest and buy a good proper strain?
Or can there be something like too much air circulation? In my greenhouse
the internal fan is running for 10sec with 30sec break, and every 2min an external fan brings in
humidified air from the outside for a couple of secs, resulting in maybe 10 complete air exchanges per hour.

I Would Say Genetics, Even Clones Can Sometimes Turn Out Different. The Oysters Don't Look Bad, They Look Good. I'd Eat Them No Problem, No Questions Asked.

What are your temps?  May be a bit too warm for the strain... but mostly I think it's not enough FAE.  Oysters care not for your fans.  They just don't do well in greenhouses, not enough air.

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.

yeah, they want max FAE. I had this same problem and I "ramped up" my FAE once too but until I had it going 24/7 for blue oysters I didn't see what kind of FAE they really needed.

Forrester and a few others were a big help troubleshooting that one!

and yeah they'll still be plenty tasty, they just look and grow wack. They'll be bigger and meatier with proper FAE though.

yea.. they look like these mushrooms from this other thread from this other guy.. he had fae issues.

save yourself a bunch of error and just put your exhaust on 24/7 so that you pull humidified air into your martha all the time. Don't even bother getting all the fails and up turned gills numerous times with trying to get timing of air flushes per hour with timers and such. You want to simulate "outside" in a martha. "Outside" is not simulated with flushes. Think about it. If you step outside you get constant fresh air. Not flushed fresh air every so often.

Every time I see threads about people trying to get an air flush per hour system timing down instead of running fae i/o 24/7, I shake my head thinking silly wabbits.

Ok thanks a lot for the feedback. I just found it hard to believe that the Lion's mane is doing fine while the Oysters are begging for more fresh air. But I'll give it a try:thumbup:

And you bet they were tasty:crazy2:

if you increase your FAE for your LM they will look less like cauliflower.
